Hi Seakarvan,
I lived there last year and had time to explore the area.
The gorge your friend is talking about is probably the beautiful Myanba
Creek Gorge. A lovely walk through the natural bush along a boardwalk, over the
creek and to the magnificent falls. Great
views down the valley toward the coast. It is in the South East Forests NP and not hard to find but the drive through the logged Bomabala
State Forest can be a bit of an eyesore. There is a
camping ground,
Waratah Gully, near Pheasants Peak
While you're out there a trip to Mt Pheasant
Lookout is worthwhile.
The Platypus Reserve, behind the race track, is a nice quiet place for a picnic and birdwatching. A small track runs along the river and last i was there they were starting to build a bird hide. If you have lots of patience you may even spot a platypus.
Bombala Railway Stn has some good local history and in the area are some old sidings with public access like Buckalong, restored Jincumbilly, Holt's Flat and Maclaughlin but be careful of snakes and rotting floor boards.
The track running south along the west side of the river from town is a know snake track so wear you boots if you feel like wander down that way.
The historic Coolumbooka Bridge, just a few kms out of
Bombala on the Mt Darragh Rd is rumoured to be slated for demolition so it would be worth taking a look at. The flooding last Autumn nudged it a bit.
Delegate has a great nature walk with bird hides along the river too.
Further afield,
Wyndham is a gorgeous little town on the way to
Merimbula and has a great pub, good community atmosphere on a Sunday afternoon and Candelo Markets are one of the biggest in the region. Mt Imlay is totally worth the side trip, accessible from coast and Goodenia
Rainforest Walk on the Darragh Road to
Merimbula or Newtons Crossing on the Imlay Road to Eden.
Most of this is accessible via dirt roads but, thanks to the logging industry, the roads are
well maintained.
Enjoy your time in Platypus Country!
Cheers

Thanks all for some great insider info as
well the good sense of humour shown by the two "mates" ha ha
The missus and I now have the unrushed time to have a good look at this great country of our's and after more than 50 years (I started with mum and Dad in a 12X12 marque tent as a kid)
I have worked out about 3 lifetimes should do it.
We'll have a good go just in case we don't make it - thanks again and Cheers

Just up the road from me is a
nice camping spot ( near Tantawangalo, or outside of candelo which you will find the the
camping book from boiling billy publications - think it was the far south coast book or something similar in name - no affiliation btw ) has
creek side
camping (
same creek runs though our property ) all the
places Terra'Mer suggested should certainly be on your " to do list " i would also add a visit to Mumbulla Falls- there are a few clips on youtube to entice you - here is one --

just be aware the rocks are very slippery when dry - and when wet - like walking on slimy rocks at
the beach so please be very very careful around them - but
well worth the trip - kids love it as do the adults :)
