I am after some help please?
I have a Kenwood system in my Terracan and the GPS Module has decided to quit. I have been quoted nearly $800 to replace it and it uses the Garmin System and if I was to get it repaired (which I am not) it will cost me about another $700 for map updates from Garmin.
I would like to know if there is any other GPS's that will have Outback Maps. I have looked at the Tom Tom and they don't do Outback Maps.
I am not up with too much modern technology and would also like to know if there is any thing available that I could run on a laptop as we usually take it when travelling. I realise that I would not have Internet connection in the outback but I would guess that outback maps loaded up would do the job.
I am talking
places like
Birdsville, Innaminka and the likes of
the Tanami Track.
Some tips and advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks

There are many options available to you. One option is to replace your current Kenwood system with a unit such as Polaris sell or buy a similar 2 Din unit off ebay that runs Windows CE . This system runs packages such as OziExplorer CE which opens up a whole world of possibilities for off road maps that are the best available in Australia. Hema and NATMAP and many state based mapping agencies products come to mind.
One point to note is that you need to buy the whole OziExplorer package for the PC plus the add on OziExplorerCE for the vehicleat about $170. The maps would be extra unless you have an independent source.
These units usually run a city navigation package such as Garminn, TomTom or iGo for around town voice guided navigation . Oziexplorer is best for the no urban areas.
As I said at the start, that's just one option of many. There are cheaper ones that would involve buying a 5", 6" or 7" gps that you fix to your windscreen in additon to your Kenwood to run OziExplorer on and this could cost from around $135 upwards, off Bay of course.

There are different types of GPS users BigFella - I for example wouldn't have anything that didn't allow me to create and navigate my own tracks - but this has overheads.
Several systems will run Ozi-Explorer , good stuff but also requires overheads.
If you want it relatively simple with good outback maps included at less than $600 checkout this 5 inch product.

Hi there Bigfella,
The VMS built-in range of GPS units may be worth a look
These use the OxiExplorer system for offroad travel and with the Hema range of maps, you will not require anything else.

If you are looking for something cheaper and more portable, the Hema HN5i is also very good. This also uses OziExplorer and includes all Hema maps.
This unit also has iGo street navigation but I cannot comment on this particular application.
The unit is available from the ExplorOz
Shop.
