Road tunnels

Away from the cities there don't seem to be many places where the road goes through a tunnel. This one is on the old Grafton-Glen Innes road which is a great winding drive through some pretty spectacular country.Image Could Not Be Found The tunnel is not very long, cut through solid rock and right above the river. Logging trucks use the road so we didn't hang around too long taking photos!

There must be a few other tunnels - where are they?

Cheers,

Val.

There is a another little one on the Wombeyan Caves Rd in the Southern Highlands, NSW. A traffic mirror at each end, if I recall correctly, as there is a sharp 90deg bend each side of the tunnel.

Hi Val,
When I read the title of your Thread, before I scrolled down, the first one that came to mind was the Old Glen Innes Rd Tunnel.
Very well known around these parts for a great days driving into the old Gold Fields.
There is a lot of country between Dorrigo and the Queensland boarder along the Gibraltar range. As well as a great deal of untold history.

Cheers.

Jon

Boolboonda Tunnel is a lot longer than the Old Gwyder Highway one. You need to put your lights on to get through it.

There are two on the Newnes Plateau, out from Lithgow, on the road to the glow worm tunnel. Both are, as is the glow worm tunnel, on the alignment of the former Wolgan Valley Railway.

The walk to the second train tunnel ( or glow work tunnel ) is a nice walk - just take Gum boots and torches - have not been there for years and last time it was over grown - so maybe even hidden unless National sparks and wildfires have been in and cleaned it up-

also the Jenolan caves have a BIG tunnel you can drive through.....

The top of the tunnel was dug out round to fit the boilers through. A 250 would have been really tight lol.

I have been through the one on the Old Grafton Road. When in USA in 1998 I stayed with friends in the central Wyoming town of Thermopolis, went for a drive down Wind River Canyon on Highway 20 to Boysen Dam, there's 3 tunnels on that road all within a couple of Klms.

And on I-70 Eastbound at 11,300 ft I went through a long tunnel West of Denver.

Have a drive through and around the Swiss/French/Italian Alps. Pretty soon get sick of tunnels as you start to think there are more tunnels than not, then of course the St Gotthard @ over 16km long. The viaducts are bloody awesome as well, particularly around Lake Geneva.

G'day Val,

I have done a lot of travel in the forests around the area of Northern NSW & never seen that tunnel. Beautiful part of the country so I will have to put that on my list to see.

One that comes to mind is the tunnel at Jenolan caves in the Blue mountains but it gets pretty busy in there in comparison with the one in your photo.

Cheers

One from Kiwi land that we went through was the Homer Tunnel on the way to Milford Sound. Even slipped a bit in the little hired Toyota on the way through.

This is from Wikipedia

The Homer Tunnel is a road tunnel in the Fiordland region of the South Island of New Zealand, opened in 1954. New Zealand State Highway 94 passes through the tunnel, linking Milford Sound to Te Anau and Queenstown, by piercing the Main Divide at the Homer Saddle.[1] It connects between the valley of the Eglinton and Hollyford Rivers to the east and that of the Cleddau to the west.

The tunnel is straight and was originally single-lane and gravel-surfaced. The tunnel walls remain unlined granite. The east portal end is at 945 m elevation; the tunnel runs 1270 m at approximately a 1:10 gradient down to the western portal.[2] Until it was sealed and enlarged it was the longest gravel-surfaced tunnel in the world

That from memory is a fairly long tunnel Phi. I can remember doing it in 1984, in a coach, on a day trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound. We drove into it in thick fog and rain, and exited to look out over Milford Sound there before us in beautiful sunshine. It's a moment I'll never forget. That brings back some memories, as my partner from back then is now deceased.

We had snow at both ends. The road surface near the ends was a bit icy and interesting or extreme depends on how slippery you like your roads. Its runs 1270 meters at a gradient of 1 in 10.

We also visited the Manapouri Underground Power Station on a tour. To get there you can only do it by a tour. The power station is at the end of a 2km (1.2 miles) spiral tunnel down underground. Its a huge underground machine hall and well worth the visit. They said it was mainly built to supply power to an aluminium smelter down around Invercargill.

I still do not know how the driver turned that bus around. He had something like 2" on each side of the bus at one time. Yeah I do exaggerate. But I take my hat off to him.

Phil

The Sandy Hollow one was great and saved going up over the top of the range. It is now used for a train.

There was also the Cheviot Tunnel in Victoria but it has just recently been closed to vehicles. (Can walk through)

Likewise there is one north of Toowoomba but can only walk it.

There is also one at Mooloolah on the Sunshine Coast but I think it is also closed to vehicles now.

If you want to drive through tunnels go to Canada. Lots and lots on their highways through the Rockies.

I am pretty sure there is a tunnell on a new section (3+ years ago) of the Tweed Valley Way up near Murwillumbah, no photos though as its on a freeway.

I am also trying to locate some photos that I have of the tunnels on the road down to the Glowworm Tunnel at Newnes, something must have gone wrong with the backup system.

G'day Jon

Well I got one right anyway, Fiona reminded me that I didn't take any photos of the tunnel's (now I know there was two) because of the water dripping heavilly off the ceilings at the time we visited.

My cameras don't like water much, but there was probably a hint of couldn't get interested, so now we will have to go back - not a problem as it's just down the road.

The Coolangatta one I would never have remembered, just goes to show how really useful this forum is!
