hey folks, wife and i are looking to flee over the xmas new year period but not sure where to. we are brisbane based and were thinking to do a predominately black top trip to the longreach, winton area. once there we would explore the region without getting to far off the beaten track due to it being hot as buggery. so my question is, is it just an utterly silly time of year to head to this area due to the heat and do places/businesses close down due to lack of tourists. i know there are better times of the year but you know how it is. maybe there is somewhere southwest of brisbane with plenty of attractions and history? we are self sufficient for a few days at a time, and love a pub.

many thanks
jamie

Baz & Pud have good taste in caravans but seem to be a little bit biased when it comes to Tassie lol lol.

See QLD first.

G/Day Jamie

We were out that way last June.

There are plenty of things to see and do.

You are right about the heat and flies this time of the year.

We found a few good pubs that catered for our needs.

Some of the tourist attractions at Longreach are seasonal but the Hall Of Fame and Qantas Museum should be open.

Out at Winton there is a Dinosaur attraction just out of town.

But the Lark Quarry is closed for saftey reasons.

You might consider doing the loop via Rockhampton, Blackwater, Emerald, Barcaldine ect.

And comming back via Charleville, Roma, and heading to Stanthorpe and doing a few winery tours.

Cheers.

You could try Kwiambal National Park -South of Texas 02 67364298 will get you the Office at Tenterfield - from there you can camp along the Severn River and explore the Macintyre Falls,Caves and do a road trip to Kings Plains National Park. Nice Camp area and approx 6 hrs from Brisbane - Park is not far from a small town called Ashford.
