I asked this question on a caravan site ......am looking for another tow vehicle for our 2.9 tonne caravan , vehicle has to be an auto ... and less than $40K - choices are
1)Patrol 4800 wagon - thirsty - gas can have problems
2)GLX cruiser - thirsty - high mileage for the price range
3)Discovery 3 TDV6 - reliability ?
4)Jeep Grand Cherokee - reliability ?
I am keeping our GU 2006 ute for our outback trips
- this 'new' vehicle will end up being my missus car
cheers

I know some of these have higher klms but these motors are a pearler, super reliable, economical, and will see 500thou if
well serviced. Any thing in petrol towing just on 3T is going to drink the fuel, when towing this weight the only way personally I would go is turbo diesel, if only towing for a few weeks of the year then I would cop the extra the petrol will cost but going by the sounds of it you do alot of towing so turbo diesel would be the way to go, You wont see under 20L per 100 I personally dont think in any of the petrol motors, If like my uncles old 80 series (since sold and got 100 series T/D) it was anywhere upto 28L per 100 with the 4.5L petrol. Not sure of the weight of his van but is around the 23 foot, shower.
toilet etc. Prados are around the 20 towing in petrol, this is freeway cruising, then you have head winds, hills etc. I know Robin Miller on here has the 4.8 x2 but dont think the new one is on gas only the old one which he still has, but Im sure he has towed and will be able to give you fuel figures.............

Hi
Kimba
Neither of my 4800 Patrols is on gas - I will resist as long as I can - also don't tow anything more than a ton - did get 26lt/100km towing a 750kg load across the Simpson , but that was in the more economical manual one.
The 100 series TD 151kw is better tow car than the Patrol , have a mate with a nice Lexus 100 series petrol (think it has the aluminium block) , that version used to drop its air
suspension soon as you put towbar downforce on it , I'd stay away from that version.

Seems to me like your list is about the way it is Lizard.
GLX V8 is a good choice , but if you going to gas the patrol is more suitable.
They are often sub $30k so these is plenty of scope to re-do the valves and generally check our the gas install.
The Discovery and Jeep came second last and last in reliability surveys of around that era.

So overall I guess its time to start a search for a good item of either Pat or GLX

Your biggest issue will be how long will the auto trannie last towing that much. Don't count on much if you buy a Nissan.
