Mapping software for ipad 2

I am purchasing an ipad 2 after xmas during the sales for the main purpose of using on my around oz trip in April. What would be the best mapping software with offroad tracks and camp areas to load onto the ipad. I know there is oziexplore, but is that compatible with mac products? What would i need to get everything going. Thanks for any advice...

I was under the impression that apple products are price controlled so while there can be minor variations they are always about the same price between shops and dont get sold on special

Unless there is a super dooper drop in the price of the IPad 2 and you are desperate to have one I would wait until March when the IPad 3 is to be released. I am hanging off as I think from what has been leaked that the 3 will be a major update on the 2.

Gidday Saue

Hanging off is always good in theory ... bit like the bloke who is still driving a HQ Kingswood cos he didn't like the HZ and he heard Holden were bringing out a better one. He still has a VHS recorder cos he is waited for the DVD technology rows to be settled and now he has heard that Blueray might be going to be updated.

I am a late adopter with technology (bought my first laptop only the other day and I know I should have gone straight to a tablet) but I figure that eventually you have to decide what you want and bite the bullet and buy it. Or you end up like me (no i am not the man with the HQ and the VHS, I made that up)

And having bought it is best if you don't look at an ad for whatever it was for a few months because you dont want to know that the price has gone down or that the new model is better.

If Apple runs true to form we will get the Ipad2S and then the rumour mill will be telling us how good Ipad3 is going to be.

It's dark now so i'll go and light the kero lamps, not sure these low energy bulbs are much good and I can't get the old incandescents any more ...

Cheers

Oziexplorer does not run on the iPad , it may one day but now.

I have an ipad2 and have been playing around with memory map which is free but you buy the maps.

Hema have just released a iPad app with all the maps you need $179. It uses memory map as well, but as said you can buy selected maps from the memory map store, you can install memory map on PC to get a feel for it.

VMS also have iPad app with maps, they have a special on at the monof $150 I think, not sure which is better.

Other products to look at Bitmap, some like it some don't . It does not work well for me though.

You will find a few free apps in the apple store which are worth loading.

Make sure you get the 3G version of the IPAD as the WIFI only one does not have a gps, you probably new that any way.

I have mounted the iPad on the dash using a clicon device, seems to work well, but a bit kore expensive than I thought.

As Richard has stated, OziExplorer will not run on an iPad.

You may like to investigate the Samsung Galaxy Tab which runs the Android Operating System.

Samsung has just won a court challenge by Apple and will release the Galaxy before Christmas.

The Android Operating System allows seamless integration with Microsoft applications and will support OziExplorer. As well, it comes with street by street navigation (Navigon) and Australian and New Zealand maps.

How good will it prove to be?
Only time will tell.

Me, I'm going to stick with my proven Hema Navigator with OziExplorer and all necessary Hema maps preloaded.
I use a TomTom device when I "hit the big smoke" cities and towns, then I don't interrupt Ozi recording and display.

Whether an iPad, or Galaxy, or whatever, you need to have a suitable mount for your vehicle, otherwise they will be useless.

I used my iPad2 with VMS maps and a window mount, for a trip from Cairns to Alice including the Plenty and Sandover highways, and off road tracks which are barely passable. The tracks were all there and the system worked perfectly. This was all much more user friendly than Oziexplorer. VMS has a special on for Exploroz members at present.
