Vic Alps 4X4 Trails?

Just wondering if the 4X4 trails through the Vic Alps, ie, Limestone Creek/Benambra to Baw Baw/Walhalla, have snow posts and are the 4X4 huts locked or available for hikers to shelter overnight in winter?

Reason for asking is that I will be doing a snowshoe/hiking trek across the Australian Alps in July and rather than sticking to the Australian Alps Walking Track I will also use fire trails and other service roads where snow will present too great a safety risk, eg, Crosscut Saw.

Cheers
Terra

There are a few things which bother me here:

You are posting to an internet forum which (these days) mainly deals with caravanners and families who frequent the well trodden trails (ie Birdsville Track) and stay in serviced campsites - and you're doing this to enquire about safety features in some of the toughest country in Australia at the toughest time of year - where, if you make the wrong mistake, you're dead. Hhhhmmmm...?

Second: Limestone Creek is one hell of a long way from Mount Baw Baw - about six hours by vehicle *on sealed roads* - probably two or three days by 4WD tracks.

Third: the High Country huts are not "4X4" huts, they are either huts built for the emergency use of High Country workers and travellers or, occasionally, by other groups. I'm not being pedantic, I'm simply concerned you seem to be unaware of details of shelters which may save your life if you get into trouble.

To answer your questions: No, in general, the huts are never locked - with a few exceptions for private huts.

No, there are no regular road/track marking type snow depth poles I have ever seen - just assume it's all deep.

Additionally:
*do not* assume all the huts you see on maps are actually there on the ground - many have been destroyed by fire or fallen to the wrath of time.

*do not* assume they will have any firewood or kindling available, most (all?) will not and finding it under snow isn't easy.

May I ask? Are you Australian or an overseas visitor? And do you have any previous experience of the High Country, especially in winter?

NM, don't worry, I'm not that ignorant.

Just thought that the 4X4 OE forum users may have been through that area. There still seems to be a lot of intrepid adventurers here who do get off the main routes. Have you had a look at the 4X4 track notes for the Mansfield-Harrietville trip attached to this thread?

I have trekked through here on numerous occassions in various seasons including snow but only following the AAWT. Just looking at alternatives. I know the Viking Wilderness and Crosscut Saw will be difficult on snowshoes seeing as it wasn't easy without snow but saying that I was stuck on the Viking in an electrical snow storm one autumn and that wasn't too bad.

I'm fully equipped for snowshoe trekking and very experienced in the NSW high country, mainly the mainrange, in all conditions. Basically I'm just trying to find out as much info as possible so I can give the Parks my plan B and C if I need them.

Re Huts, having visited more than 30 huts across NSW and Vic Alps before and after the big fire I know some have not been rebuilt yet and there are some outside the park boundaries managed by 4X4 clubs, hunting clubs, etc that are locked and a few locked xcountry club huts inside the parks but this trip will take me past more than I have already visited and it is smart to know which ones are accessible before I need to detour there for shelter.

Cheers

I'm after specifics, like fire trail names and club hut names, not only general info and advice.

I know it's a bit like sticking my neck out posting questions like this but I appreciate any info

: )

There are to my knowledge only snow posts on sealed roads. Many roads and tracks are closed in winter. The Interactive CD of Victoria has all the mapping information you need. Many locations you are not allowed off roads or tracks even on foot.

Terra.
Welcome to the forum, I wish there where more people like you doing interesting stuff. Adverse comments are from people who are not capable of doing such a thing. I can not tell you which huts are locked in winter but I hope none as it would destroy the argument for these huts being allowed to exist in a state park. As for the snow depth, I think it will be zero for most of your walk. Eric.

Thanks EE
According to latest estimated snowlines, sth and nth faces from Namadgi NP all the way down to Walhalla, the trek will be approx 3/4 below snowlines but I expect a few storms to lower altitudes. I will be making detailed notes of general track and trail access all the way and will blog it when finished.

There are some good maps available in the EO shop for bush huts as well as some adventure and activities maps. Good scales too. They will be a great compliment to the topos I will be carrying.

Hullo Terra'Mer
RoofTop maps have lots of notes and in general are more accurate/up-to-date than Hema in the Vic HC. A quick gander at the EO shop would suggest that they do not carry the full range.
But of course, many fires since the last publication means some info is not accurate. In this regard the Victorian High Country Huts Association may well be able to give you the latest.
Cheers

Thank you Andrew
I have full set of 1:25/50,000 scale, they're just topographic survey maps, perfect for good ol fashion navigation but I've noticed some of the larger scale maps have a bit more info like places of interest and historic info.
I have donated to both the Vic HC and Kosciuszko Hut Associations so looks like I'll be back in touch again for an update.
Cheers
