John Forrest National Park - advice please

I have a confession to make, I've lived in Perth for 11 years and have never been to this NP !! I guess it's probably not ideal to visit at this time of year.. but have people coming next week that love a bushwalk and thought this would be a great place to go for a day's outing. Any suggestions or comments greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Michelle

Michelle they have free BBQ's, the tavern, the walk down the old railway formation to the tunnel and Hovea Falls are pretty good. Walk trails would be like any other hills walking environment this time of year. Flies Flies and more flies.

Enjoy your time withyour friends.

yes, I'd forgotten about the flies... BUT, we have samples of the NEW ExplorOz hat here to try out - that feature an inbuilt (zip away) flynet in the brim!

Alternatively, we could go kayaking!
Thanks,
Michelle

The end result, of course, was that the flies were all on MickO...and there were an awful lot of them (and him as well).

Yes, worked nicely George! I read about that trail but though it was 15km - looks good maybe for another time of year then. Certainly if this heat keeps up!
Appreciate your effort all the same, I will make a point one day of doing that walk.

Ah Michelle
You have brought back childhood memories by just mentioning JFNP it was a great picnic spot ,BBQ lunch, playing in the bush, having races floating leaves twigs what ever down the stream. In those days my Mothers Morris minor struggled up Greenmount Hill but a great day out.
Sorry cant help on what it,s like today probable 45 yrs since last visit but thanks for jolting the memories.
In October by accident found Lesmurdie Falls again (also went there as a kid ) great views of the city with just a short walk but probable no water going over at this time of the year

Hi Michelle,
I live across the highway from JFNP and have wandered around the park a few times. Probably the best walk (and easiest) is from the start of the railway historic track at the top end of Morrison Road. This will take you along the old rail line, through the tunnel and past the John Forrest Tavern all the way to Hovea.
There is also a good scenic drive which enters left off GEH opposite the Bilgoman pool and winds around to the Park entrance and through to Hovea.
If you wish to go through the main entrance and utilise the picnic area adjacent to the Tavern, you can turn left off GEH just before McGlew Road. This will take you to the entrance and the tavern.
I believe there is now a gatehouse at the park entrance and a fee is levied. If you are just going for a walk and don't want to utilise the picnic facilities, just enter from the Morrison road end.

That's great info, thanks Dingoblue. As a local, would you suggest it might become an uncomfortable day at this time of year though? Not interested in the tavern or picnic area for this visit.

Maybe instead I should take them in the evening to a good city lookout point from the hills - do you have any suggestions for that?

Living up north, we don't ever see the city lights!! LOL

Hi again Michelle,
the weather's fine at the moment but as with any bush walk in the Summer, it's just a matter of picking your days.
The best lookout to view the city from JFNP is the road I mentioned that turns off GEH opposite Bilgoman pool. You will see several areas where you can stop but we usually watch the Skyshow from a point where the road bends to the right. Probably only 1km in.
The road continues on until you reach a fork. Left to park entrance and right onto GEH.
As a matter of interest, this road is the one that Targa West use as a special stage.

Hi good lady,

A bit futher away is Lesmurdie Hill. About two thirds up on the right there is a pullover. It is best to go to the top, turn around and then come down to it.

Where Tony is on about is on Welshpool Road and is a fantastic place to view the city at night. Where you would need to turN around to get to the look out is on the Cnr of Welshpool Rd & Crystal Brook Roads. Opposite the Crystal Brook servo on Welshpool Rd (30m from this corner) there is the Lion's Lookout. There is a large car park, shelter with table and BBQ. The tracks from there will take you west towards Orange Grove and the southern tracks will take you to Paxwolds and the Kanyana Wildlife rehabilitation & sanctuary. Nice walks and there may still be orchids out.

Thanks Dunc - David will know the road exactly, as that's the road he did all his training on for the world champs this year - on his bike! Never heard of Orange Grove, Paxwolds or Kanyana Wildlife sanctuary (but that's right up our alley). Gosh, an adventure awaits in my own town, whoever would have throught tee hee!! Great!

I concur with what others have said. A good, easy walk is to go in at the "midland end" of the park and follow the old rail line, through the CY O'Conner tunnel, and up to the falls.

Yes, our beaches are rubbish. Not with going to. Stay away.

Go there all the time. If you go on a weekend they try and charge you which is no on. Park at the western end and walk past the falls and tag via the tunnel. I have done the eagle trail. It shouldn't be a problem this time of year as it doesn't get overly warm in perth and if it does it doesn't warm up till mid afternoon. I've bushwalked alot of the scarp and while everyone raves about perth very average beaches. The hills is the true attraction

Jeez....a bold statement about the beaches!
Hills are the only place to live in Perth. The coastal strip is a bit inhospitable, crowded and bleak, but seems to attract the money.
Can't agree with you about 'average' beaches though, yet to see many comparable metropolitan beaches in the other Oz cities. Adeliade no, Melbourne no, Brisbane no, Darwin no, Sydney maybe.

Hi Michelle.

WalkGPS is a great site. There is a JFNP walk logged and described at http://www.walkgps.com/Eagle%27s%20View%20%28John%20Forrest%20Nat.%20Park%29%20walk.htm.

Cheers.

Thanks John, I'll take a look at that.

Oh, I must be getting confused in my old age then ;)
I remember that day Rod. It was the first time I'd ever been approached on the roadside by a person I didn't know who knew me (and my name) from the internet - it was a bizzare moment. I'm used to it now of course LOL
So nice that you are still here :)

My recollection was we were someone on the Great Eastern Highway - we stopped in a very small town somewhere midway between Midland and Kalgoorlie... and you were across the road at a servo with a few other vehicles and walked over to us. But no matter, I get confused sometimes.
