Thanks for your help with my last post, esp to Dennis.
I have looked around at 98 Holden Jackaroos and they look pretty good... Does anyone have any comments on negative aspects. NRMA reckons fuel economy on the diesel and petrol are quite good, but says there is restricted front leg room and rearward vision restrictions?

Nelli hi,
I've had my '94 Monty Auto Petrol now for 5 weeks, no complaints at all.
Not sure on the leg room, I find there is plenty. No vision restrictions, mind you
I spose if you have the rear dickie seats hanging up that would restrict
view through rear 1/4's. So far but not acurate I'd be doing ~19L/100km
for fuel and thats city stop start and bit of go at the lights.
Room is good however I do find my old jackaroo '84 vintage had more room
in the back with the seats folded up. But the old seats were pretty thin and basic,
not as bulky as the new ones.
Good ride height and view. Good size too, overall that is. Easy to
park that's with full
barwork.
enjoy
no negatives here Nelli.
cheers

Nelli.
Had my 2002 Jack since new. Petrol auto equip. Very happy to date although maybe should have got diesel. Just two of us travelling so size suits also. Just one complaint, 85ltr tank. Now resolved with replacement 140ltr. From talking to others with Jack's they all find them very reliable petrol or diesel. Fuel economy good all things considered.

WimThis 4WD stuff is addictive,
time consuming & expensive.

Hi Nelli
I've had a petrol 98 Se Jack now for 2 years & it has been going great. I'm 5"11 & no problem with leg room. I don't have a problem with rear vision, usually going forward anyway. The fuel ecconomy is quite good about 14 or 15/100km around town & down to 11 or 12/100km on long trips.
Cheers

Nelli,
Jacks are good trucks, but what are you looking for diesel or petrol?
From another site i visit just to do with Isuzu's there has been quite a lot of bad comment about the 3.0TD, a bit like the Nissan 3.0TD. The older 3.1 TD which is in my Isuzu MU are ok (old teck probably), anyway I can tell you that they are built like a truck and now that's all Isuzu build.
Good luck with your buy, Regards BruceMU-ving on

I have a 2000 Jack,Petrol, Auto with all the bells and whistles and could not be happier.Fuel is as someone said, town is 15-16 and travelling 11-12 l/100k. Leg room is good for me (6ft1 and 17stone), so it should be good for anyone. I hope to hang onto
mine for the "great trip" in 3years. If looked after, you should get good value out of it.

I have a 99 petrol SE auto. I bought it new and have just clicked over 120,000kms. I am 6'3" and 18.5 stone and have plenty of leg room. Rear vision seems OK to me but I removed the dickie seats as soon as I got it home. I carry 203lts of fuel when full, so don't have a problem with range. I would go for the Deisel if buying again, but only for the fuel economy when towing, the petrol seems to increase it's thirst when really working hard. Other than that, I couldn't fault it. We have done "the big trip",
Simpson Desert, GRR, Bungles, Gulf country,
Palm Valley,
Chambers Pillar etc., as
well as the
Vic high country.
The early Deisels did seem to have some problems with injectors, which could be worth investigating and they need 2 batteries to help them get started in cold weather.
All in all, the Jackaroo is developing an enviable reputation, which in my opinion is
well earned.
Happy
trails, Mike.

Hi Mike ...
How have you setup your fuel capacity? Do you have a larger main tank plus auxiliary?
I've been thinking about getting the 4WD Systems 133L main tank for my Monterey.

Mate I had 4WD Systems in
Adelaide fit a 133ltr replacement tank and a 70ltr aux tank. To be honest, I would not use them again. The only problems I've had with the Jackaroo, have been with the tanks and their fitting. Each time I've had a problem, Systems have been very helpful in fixing it, but having to be trailered back to
Oodnadatta from just short of Dalhousie, ( Therefore missing out on our first attempt to cross the Simpson.) and trucked to
Derby from the mid point on the GRR. takes some getting over. When I changed the filter last week, there was still rust getting into it, from the tank. Not a good
sign after it's done about 100,000kms.
TJM offered the same setup, when pushed, I would definitely use their tank.
Happy
trails, Mike.

Hi Nelli, I have a 2000 Monterey since new. No major problems with it whatsoever.
The petrol is a little bit thirsty as 3.5L V6's go. The diesel of course is better on consumption. The problem with the 3.0TD is local knowledge on its maintenance. Two things to watch out for on the diesel is the grade of oil used as it is used to drive the injectors. Use too thick an oil and she won't start when cold. The other thing is to ensure the injector seals are replaced every 80000km to avoid total engine destruction.
There is lots of info on this site about Jack's.
All in all they are an excellent vehicle that should give you many years of reliable service. Like all cars though, you need to keep the correcting servicing up to it to make sure that you get lots of kms back.

Nelli
Sorry for the late post but.....
I have a 99TD Jack, 150K on the clock and I am quite happy with it. I do have a few niggling probs but if it was replaced it would be with another TD Jack (SE this time).
I do have a lot of issues starting it when cold but other then that its very good.
You'll be struggling to find a TD that can beat it off the lights!!!!!
Fuel is around 12 to 14 L per 100 depending on city or open road and how hard you flog it.
I am 6"2 and have no issues with size either.
Tim
