Afternoon all,
In April / May of this year we are planning a 3 week trip from Gosford to
Alice Springs. We drive a 4.2 diesel Patrol and tow a Coromal off road camper.
We were thinking of going via
Broken hill,
Cameron corner and then on to the
birdsville track and head for
Alice Springs for a few days.
We would love to hear from anyone who has done this trip recently and if you could provide any reccomendations. We would also love to hear of any must do and see things along the way. The wife and 13 year old have not really been in the outback before and it is important to me that they enjoy this holiday experience.
We would also be happy to hear of any alternate routes which may be more interesting and we are not afraid to drive on unsealed roads.
Thanks
Chris.

Hi Chris,
For a 3 week trip it wouldn't make much sense to try to cram too much in. I think you would be better off going from
Broken Hill west towards the
Flinders Ranges, turning north from
Yunta, Chambers
Gorge,
Blinman, Parachilna or
Brachina Gorge then Leigh Creek/
Copley up to
Marree then across the
Oodnadatta Track to
Marla (or turn off at
Hamilton and go up to Mt Dare). Then spend a week or so around
Alice Springs - there are heaps of
places in the AS vicinity to keep you
well occupied for that length of time). Come
home down the Stuart Highway to Pt
Augusta,
Mildura, Wagga and
home.
Your proposal is to go from BH to
Cameron Corner then
Birdsville Track to Alice. From
Cameron Corner you would go onto the
Strzelecki Track which takes you either to Innaminka or
Marree. The
Birdsville Track wont take you to Alice.
Have a look at our
blogs - we have been through your area of interest several times, so you might get some ideas there.
Whichever way you go you should have a great time.
Cheers,
Val

I agree. However you could go from
Cameron Corner down the Strzelecki towards Arkaroola if going to the corner is a priority.
Birdsville is a long way out of the way especially with
Walkers Crossing closed. The
Flinders Ranges are an awesome priority for me, I reckon they are tops.

Val
We are doing a big trip this year incorporating
oodnadatta Simpson and
birdsville also coming from
Sydney via
broken hill would you recommend the above directions if we wanted close to the fastest way to the start of the
oodnadatta? Or would we be better off going down to Orroree and heading towards
Hawker and up to
Marree?

Litlbalt,
If you want the fastest way to
Marree stick to the bitumen ie via
Orroroo. The more scenic way would be via
Yunta as described - but that way is mostly gravel with some wining sections through the gorges.

i reckon you can easily do it in 3 weeks, but it will involve quite alot of driving. have a look at the 3 week trip we did last year out through some of the areas you wish to visit .....
