Hi
My father is thinking of running Tom Tom or Sygic on his iPad, for street navigation.
Just wondering if anyone is using either on there iPad, and what they think of the apps.
Thanks in advance
Cheers
Neil

If you can put up with the small screen size, they will work well.

I don't have either of the apps mentioned, however I run CoPilot Premium on my iPhone and it compares favourably with the TomTom Go720 device I also have.
The TomTom is the primary device I use for street navigation, however CoPilot Premium is a worthy "backup" for times when I don't have the TomTom with me.

Regardless of which application you use, I have one "problem" when using it in my vehicle. My vehicle has bluetooth capability and I use this for hands free communication for the iPhone through the vehicle's audio system.
When running the CoPilot app, the audio keeps swapping between the radio function and the voice guided directions, which is rather annoying.
I could disable bluetooth, but then I wouldn't have hands free communications which I believe is a must for safer driving, not to mention the heavy fine for using a hand held phone in the vehicle.
Apart from that it works extremely well as the small screen display is not particularly important if relying on voice guided directions.
I tend to use the TomTom Go 720 in my vehicle, but the iPhone app is useful for the work vehicle, or when travelling in my wife's car.

I did think of purchasing the TomTom app at one time, but CoPilot Premium was a mere $29.95 and as I have used CoPilot before on a PDA, I couldn't resist the temptation.

I am fond of TomTom, but CoPilot Premium on the iPhone is a worthy alternative.

Chit! I just reread your post after submitting my reply and you were referring to the iPad, not an iPhone, so ignore the bit about the smaller screen size.

I have copilot premium on my ipad for australia.
I had use coplilot europe hd when overseas last year on my ipad and it worked well.

I have had copilot on a pda.

I like the product BUT it is designed for an iphone size.

You can run at 2x on your ioad to make it bigger but the graphics etc are not as good, thry are a bit blocky.

I think there is or may be another form of copilot for ipad which may be better.

Hut the price of the premium version was tempting, and it is a good product, but not perfect

I take it that you would need the 3G version of the iPad because the WIFI version does not have a GPS function.

Hi Neil,

I have Sygic on my iPad, and it appears to work fine.

I say appears as I don't use it much for Navigation as I have the old Garmin Nuvi and it works for me.

You will need to get some form of mount for it to be at all useful though, something like a Ram Mount.

cheers,

Kris

Hi Kris
We both have Nuvi's, but my father is looking for a larger screen for use with his motor home. He is also looking at the iPad RAM mount with the goose neck, that mounts to the floor or seat mount.
Thanks

Hi Neil,

Looking at similar. Have you located a RAM mount for the Ipad? If so where.

Kind regards

I've mounted the Ipad in my cruiser and there is quite a discussion on ipads in thread 90434. A link to some photos is also in that thread.
Another thread on Ipad mounts is 90430.

I bought an ipad RAM mount from Johnny Appleseed GPS and am happy with it. Seems quite strongly built and attaches to the windscreen. I put it way over to the left hand side so as not to obstruct vision. Cheers.

I have a clicon mount for my ipad and it is very easy to install, no screws and works well.

metroview australia is what I run on the iphone. I haven't tried it on the ipad yet.
It is great for street mapping.

Hi

Maybe try NavFree GPS Live Australia & New Zealand before heading down the commercial path..also various versions for other countries. I assume it uses OSM data so not up to pace with ones you have to pay for in some aspects, maybe better in others...but could be a good option for some.

I have Sygic and my son has Tom Tom, both on ipad. I think Tom Tom is better. Also, I have not been happy with some parts of Sygic that don't get the speed limits right. For instance, it has the speed limit on the Hume Hwy from Albury to Melbourne as 100kph. It gets the speed limits wrong in many many places especially in Victoria. It sometimes picks crazy routes as well. That's my 2 cents from personal experience. Cheers
