Hi Everyone,
I know that everyone will have very definite ideas about this one. I am going to buy my better half a new hat, he has an Akubra but we are going to do a trip to the Kimberley this year for 14 weeks, and Akubras tend to be a bit hot plus we will be travelling in a Topaz not much room and he likes to look after his Akubra so I am thinking to save stress it may be an idea to get him another hat for this trip. Requirements are a broad brim, not too hot to wear and can cope with some tuff love.
Thanks for your thoughts
Barb

Lived in the tropics (FNQ, NT WA for nigh on 40 years and never found an genuine akubra too hot. Have tried a couple of other brands but the Akubra seems to beat them hands down
We use tents and a Tvan and still have lots of room

better than a sunvisor, sunglasses to keep the setting sun out of the eyes.
Also easier for the locals to catch the 'nod of the head' as you pass by...

Can't think of any particular reason not to wear while driving unless you are too tall...

hotter?

Can see your point(s) but it isn't always sunset and driving into it - I think some blokes just like wearing their hat and there's not much wrong with that. Often see blokes wearing them on a hot day and I feel cooler without when driving so just wondered.

cheers

Funny Steve, sometimes when the sun really gets hot... the thicker hat seems better.

I don't wear them in the car though.

I wondered though at Michael A's:
" just don't wear the damn thing while driving" comment.... sounded like some pet hate or prejudice.

Another vote for Broad brimmed Barmah hats. Leather head band (as an Akubra), but can scrunch it, pack in flat in a suitcase/ backpack/ under the car seat and it springs back into a decent bash (shape).
I wear a straw Akubra when going out from home and I can look after it, but when travelling/ camping the Barbah is far more practical.

The Barmah hat with the mesh is the 1st hat I have ever had that I can say I like.
Ive never been a hat person, still arent, but if I have to wear it for sun protection, this is the one.
My dog lays on it if I leave it on the seat but it always bounces back to its original shape.
Cheap too,I think I payed about $30 at Ranger Camping.

Hi Barbara,
Let him take the Akubra for when he needs to feel "Dressed Up" and buy him a wide brim soft cotton floppy for general use.
These hats are extremely comfortable and have a myriad of uses in the bush.
Inverted it makes a drinking bowl for man's best friend, you can wipe your hands with it, use it to mop up spills or wipe dust off your vehicle seat before you get in in all your finery, the're good for wiping the dipstick on when checking the engine oil. They can be squashed into small spaces and only need to be worn to resume their shapelessness.
In fact they develop a character of their own, matching that of the owner and best of all they can be washed. (That only makes them clean, it does not remove their character).

Cheers
Disco.

Have to agree, I take away a soft cricket style wide brimmed hat. If it's hot, dip it into a creek and it keeps you nice and cool. Plus it does most of the other things except for cleaning the dipstick. LOL

Hi

After having several issues with the dreaded skin cancer I was told to always wear a broad rimmed hat. Common sense really.

Anyway we spend every winter in the kimberley and after trying many different hats I found the "Tilley" brand.

Made in Canada and have a lifetime guarantee against wear and loss.

Not cheap but simply great hats, lightweight, waterproof and cool, and they wash back to like brand new.

I found a place on the net and got mine (I have two) at around half the aussie price delivered to Perth.

I have had my first one for 5 years now.

I Have no affiliation to the company but feel their product is so good.

Yeh..well that's a good brand name, but I think I'll stick to the Akubra, Don't want to look like a dork in the Top End do we, still can wet it and put it back on the nogging, give the dog a drink from it, swat flies with it, and when things don't go right you can always stomp on it,

We all have Akubras, including Hazo the original poster, but the Tilley is an exceptional hat .

Excellent in windy weather as it will not blow off and can be packed in a suitcase flat and reshapes in seconds.

Nah Too touristy and not enough Australian for my liking.

G'day Folks

I've worn out two Tilleys since 2000, and while they have replaced them in accordance with their lifetime guarantee (altho' second time around they want postage ex Canada), I'm not sure that they cope well with sweat as a result of the Australian sun. I also think their brim could be wider.

In 2000 they were the bees knees, especially with the chin cord, but now there's lots of alternatives.

Cheers

Just brought the Exploroz hat featured in the add next to your post and was surprised by the width of the brim. I will probably use that one for work and get another for touring.

I received mine the day after I had to remove a large swarm of bees from inside the walls of a house....guess what my first thoughts were? LOL. It was a shame that I hadn't picked the mail for a week and forgot about this parcel.

A nice alternative for those areas that require a bit of extra protection.

You are on the right track with the broad brimmed hat.

Just in case you are thinking of getting an american yankee baseball hat don't! They only cover the nose and the bald spot.

If he is "attached" to the old one, as some men are, don't go too far from the same design and keep the new one as a dress up.

I have had akubras and feel comfortable and not hot in them.

Personally I would not put a floppy hat or straw hat on. I don't like them. Maybe he does. The only floppy hat I liked was my old one I snuck home from Vietnam, Faded, torn been under a tanks tracks and on patrol with me. Some low life stole it while I was washing my face after footy.

I brought a Tilleys Hat back from Canada for my better half nearly 30 years ago and it is still his favourite hat for beach, fishing or camping. It is still in good condition although no longer looking totally pristine even after a wash - must be those dip sticks! It certainly looks better than those cotton floppies and none of it has frayed or rotted! These hats even float when you drop them overboard. They are not Australian but they have real character and many stories attached to them. And I am quite fond of Canada anyway! He loves his Akubra but tends to keep it "for Best"! Lynne

+1 for the Tilley. I own three which I use mainly for golf, bushwalking and kayak fishing. IMHO the hats are brilliant, they are an extremely loose fit with a double strap that lives under the hat unless it is windy in which case one bit goes under the chin and the other across the back of your head resting on your hair. The back strap does enough that they rarely try and blow off forward when you get gusts from behind. They are lightweight and when they get dirty throw them in the washing machine.

Hi Barbara,

I reckon you must be one very brave lady! My efforts at choosing any wearing apparel for my other half are seldom successful unless he has a say in the choosing process.

When it comes to hats there is now the problem with what is comfortable given loss of thatch and the almost inevitable skin cancers or their precursors that make his scalp tender. Soft floppy cotton hats are now preferred and anything with a firm band (including his Akubra) are not comfortable.

Cheers,

Val.

Hi Barbara, more important than the type of hat is to have a hat holder, holds the hat flat against the roof out of the way, does not restrict access or vision

SWMBO bought me one for xmas, most excellent, could not recommend to highly
