It is severely corrugated.... worse than the northern bypass road going to
cape york.... There is a better than 50% chance of a broken part of some sort due to the corrugations, i dont think any 4x4 has a better chance than others...
Leave the roof rack at home and make sure you have some "kneadit".... + all the normal essentials..._____________________________________________
Cant think of anything to put here just yet !

there's some sections of GRR that are like a national highway and there's others that are a bit rough. Severe is a tad incorrect I believe but we all see things differently. All depends on what type of wet season they've had as to severity of road.
The
Gibb River Road myth grows in stature as the road improves with time I'm afraid. It is still worthy of considerable thought and respect but any
well maintained vehicle will get through there. Good quality tyres would be my first bit of advice.
You could spend as little as 2 weeks and enjoy yourself thoroughly but I would recommend at least 4 weeks. This would allow you to get to
Kalumburu, Mitchel Plateau and Purnululu NP.Allyn
Some days we are the flies; some days we are the windscreen.

I agree with Coops entirely. The last time I was there however was in 1986. There was a bloke in a Landcruiser towing a van on the GRR somewhere near Jacks
Waterhole and he had the roof of the van fall in on itself due to the severe corrugations. He wasn't a happy man. You may be lucky and scoot through just after the graders have been.
The road to
Kalumburu was not much better. We took it easy and had an enjoyable three weeks out there visiting all the
places including
King George Falls out on Carson River Station and Punululu which was then still known as the Bungle Bungles.
Cheers,
Willem
Always going somewhere

The boy's and there mates did the road last year, six vehicals no punctures, must say they are all expericenced bush drivers(grew up in the central west of NSW and worked on cattle Station's as teen ages) they took thier time and took it steady.
one of the vehicals with the group was a new automatic holden Frontera bog standard right down too the tyres, made the trip just like the rest of them no worries.
Don't over load your vehical,
Tyres need to be in first rate order
make sure everythingMechanical is in good order and plan on taking plenty of extra time to do the road and you will probably be surprised. the usual kit of spares (belt's, hoses, puncture repair kit, air pump& bead breaker, a spare tyre plus your normal spare is possibly a minimun anyway.
This could cause a few arguments but "Don't Over Inflate" your tyres, you need enough air to carry the load on them but soft enough to still have some flex in them. what this pressure is for your vehical and tyres is something you will need to work out as you go. too hard & you shake to bits to soft & the tyres will over heat (reason for taking it slow & steady, every thing stays cooler Including the driver!)
take your time and enjoy!

GD,
you can do it in as little or as much time as you like. I had very little time in Jul 94 and went Alice to Darwin/
Kakadu, then
Katherine to Kununura, GRR,
Mitchell Plateau,
Broome,
Halls Creek (Purnululu), Tanami, West MacDonnells, Alice in the Pajero in two weeks. No failures or breakages at all. Just slow right down in the rough stuff.
I think we've gone over spares before, but extra spare wheel, compressor, tyre plugging kit are essential. Then hoses, belts, knead it, gaffa tape, fuses.Bob

Road conditions are very much dependent on the weather and at what time of the year you visit. I have never found the GRR to be that bad (3 visits). The Kimberleys is a fantastic spot - the more time the better. 3 weeks up there as a minimum unless you intend to conduct a flying visit - it's a big area. Get a hold of Ron Moon's book - that's the bible for travel up there.
Pajero will survive if you drive to the conditions and it is in good nick to begin with. I don't have a Pajero so can't comment on what things may break - obviously belts, hoses, etc are a given. Spare front & rear shockies. Tyre repair kit. Wheel studs. Maybe the local Mitsubishi dealer can help. Or a local Mitsubishi club.

I would allow at least a month to visit the
Kimberley.
As others have said conditions can change quickly,
especially if there is a little rain.
I drove the
Gibb River Road about a month ago and found it a lot better than I expected.
Other than a few corrugated sections it was a nice cruise.
There was a lot of loose sharp stones on the surface just had to slow down and be a little more cautious on those sections.
I had no tyre problems but there was other vehicles on the trip mostly with standard tyres that shredded a few.
If you're interested Im running Cooper ST's at around 28 psi.
