Hi all,
I am about to purchase a GPS, I would like some opinions on what i am about to spend big dollars on from people who understand them. I am new to them and have minimal knowledge of how to use one.
Its an "Australian GPS Platinum Meridian" Selling price is $749.00 All up.
Then I have to get what he explained is a CD called "discover Australia" So that will give me what i need as far as off roading goes (or so he explained)
He also said he would set the unit up for me before it was delivered. What do you experts think? any feed back is welcome before i part with hard earned dollars and find out i stuffed up big time.

Angelo,
I have a Magellan Meridian which I suspect is what you are looking at, I've got an older model Meridian which has now been discontinued and that was only 12 months ago, personally I'm very impressed with it, I have the unit as a stick on mount via suction cups on the windscreen and dash. I had the unit screwed to the dash of my GQ, I didn't want to drill holes again in my new bus, tends to move a little bit but nothing to much. You can't go far wrong with Magellan, I had a Garmin GPS 2 befoe this I find the Meridian with the memory card much better, plus a slightly larger display. Power consumption is good using the Meridian. My opinions. Keep the shiny side up

Have a look in the "shop" section of this site. Go to "GPS". I've ordered the Meridian Package Deal. The prices look like they're a bit lower than Dick Smith or the like.

The Meridans come with a base map that has coastlines, main roads etc.
The DiscoverAus mapping CD has much more detail including full metropolitain area street maps and good rural mappnig including most dirt roads and tracks. $235
You will also need a SD memory card and a data cable to your PC.
All of Australia is 234MB but you can load smaller segments to smaller cards.
Yes, DiscoverAus is an excellent product and worth the money.

Cokeaddict,
I got the Mapsend software, this is split up into different CD for different states, I have the CD for WA, I loaded this onto the memory card and stored the whole lot on the GPS, I have a comms cable between the GPS and my desk top this is where I conjure up all the
routes and waypoints, search for tracks etc etc. I find for what I want this software is more than adequate. Keep the shiny side up

The Mapsend state based CDs are the previous version.
DiscoverAus has a number of small updates and is cheaper
(Mapsend $140 per state, DiscoverAus $235 for all of Australia).

Just for the record, DiscoverAus has SEVERE lagging problem that Magellan is still to sort out. Mapsend is far better in this regard.

JUst bought a Garmin Emap the last few days coupled with the Exploroz navigation pack.
Let me say at this point I have no bias either way as I am a novice and playing around learning with my unit I am more than happy with its performance, I think it will do all I want to do. Probably swayed by the local commuications dealer who is selling his product and seviceability.
I did research on the gpscity site compared products and came up with the conclusion. six of one and half a dozen of the other.
Like a computer you will probably only use a percentage of its potential.
All I care is that it will take me where I want to go and return me to were I want to finish.
Good luck and whatever unit you chose they may get us to the same co-ordinate at the same time and then I don't care which brand you drink.

Hi Angelo
I have been using GARMIN GPS for the past few years. I had a 75 model for many years and have actually a GPSMAP 76 S. Garmin is world wide the leading supplier for GPS receivers and in my opinion they are pretty easy to use and very tough (I use
mine even mounted to handle bar of the off-road bike, no problem)
Check out the website: www.garmin.com to learn more or go to a Australien on-line supplier www.ja-gps.com.au there is also a lot of competent information available. Check out the Aussie Metro Map products if you want more then just the basic map of Australia. I have it and I,m quite happy. It goeas down to street level in urban areas and shows most of the out-back tracks as
well.
I think the 76S is a good compromise if you like to use maps with it, want to use it in the car and still have a hand held unit to go walking. It's not the cheapest unit. If you are a bit thight on the budget check the E-Trex serie. The have similar functionality but the display is a bit small for map reading.
It is important you know how and where you want to use the unit before you make your decision.
If you need any more assistance let me know.
Regards
Ulrich

I agree that DiscoverAus is an excellent product. It can be uploaded to the GPS, or used in conjunction with a laptop to give a fullscreen moving map display. It has to be said that the other option is to use a downmarket GPS with a laptop running OziExplorer and the Auslig Maps on CD. Certainly cheaper if you already have the laptop.Bob

Hello Angelo,
I have Magellan Map 330 GPS with the whole of Australia Mapsend loaded into it...I think. The GPS is still a big learning curve for me but I am getting there slowly. I like the altitude and speedo features of the GPS and accurately measured "Rosie's" top speed of 142kmh not so long ago. I also have a laptop setup and all the software.
The funny thing about all these toys is that we did a humungous offroad trip through the
Simpson Desert in 1987 with only a compass and a sextant and some paper maps. Go to my website www.kempen.id.au to read The Spinifex Trail. The GPS is handy however if you come to an
intersection without markers or if you have gone walking and become disorienated. The GPS is power hunger and sucks battries dry. I have
mine mounted on the dash in a holder and hardwired to the battery.
Have fun,
Cheers,
Willem
