Just to recap, I have had problems with Garmin Nuvi 1, my wifes GPS, getting the lifetime updates working. All done and Garmin one still going strong after 2 years.

Garmin Nuvi 2, my nephews, died after a couple of months, replaced with a new one, nowOK.

Garmin Nuvi 3, my own one. Died late last year, replaced under warrenty, then the speaker died, replaced under warrenty with another one that was delivered with a dead speaker!!! 3 faulty GPS's.

I will be getting my money back when I can get back to Hardly Normal with all the bits the GPs came with which will not be for a week or 3 so no GPS still other than the phone.

Garmin do not fix your GPS when it goes faulty, they give you a refurbished one that is someone elses problem that has not been fixed properly.

Garmin, good product when working, BUT when they give problems, that is when your problems start in my experience.

I also have the extended Hardly Normal warrenty on the GPS, not worth the paper it is wrtten on as it does not kick in until the Garmin warrenty has expired and they would only give me a new one that is now an obselete model.

Will I be buying another Garmin, never. Would I buy from Hardly Normal again, never as their support is so bad at the store I have been dealing with.

Ive had a Garmin nuvi 760 for about 3 years and has performed fairly ordinary. It takes forever to boot up and it constantly locks up in the same locations.. Its frustrating because it fails when in heavy traffic when a trip is selected.. Im not sure if i would buy another garmin.. Michael

Why would you expect the Harvey Norman warranty to apply prior to the Garmin warranty expiration?
The product description of "extended warranty" should have been a clue!
I think Garmin are fairly average, mine wants me to make four turns to then come back onto the road that I am already travelling on.

That 3790T is a sweet machine. I had one with my last job - the only thing I miss since moving on!

I have the Nuvi 1490T with onroad and off road maps installed, and it runs like a charm, nice big screen, very good detail on the off road maps. It has bluetooth to run the phone through. More than happy.

I didnt buy it from Norman.Hardly.

With the OZ Topo maps installed my 1490 is very good. had it now for a couple of years.

Worked well around the Vic High Country last month, showing all vehicle tracks. Found a couple of great camp sites not indicated on paper maps.

I've had a 1490 for about 2 years,or should I say I've had 3 1490 in 2 years.

First one played up since new and was replaced, second one lasted 12 months before it played up but at the time was travelling around OZ. Was replaced after about 16 months when I got home to Sydney.

Same problem on both units, kept turning itself off and rebooting itself but second one was much worse.

Third unit has been good so far. I also had the topo maps for around OZ and was very pleased with it overall.

Can't complain about the warranty as they replaced it 4 months out of warranty when I explained the circunstances but I would'nt buy another one.

Cheers Peter

When I connect to the PC it will boot up with the power from the PC but it is not connected for data transfer.
Does not show up in 'my computer' or 'mapsource' to transfer files.

Waitng on a reply from Garmin at the moment

I'd reckon the biggest problem might the Australian distributors for Garmin, the Garmin co in the US is very good to deal with.
Apart from buying my fiirst and second GPS' from Garmin when they were in their infancy (try ONE multiplexed channel that could look at six satellites!) and cost the price of a small car and weren't very reliable.
Since then I've only ever bought cheap Chinese units running winCE OS and Igo as the turn by turn software.
The first on is still going strong after 6 years without missing a beat and the two others I've bought and put in the other vehicles still work perfectly running Igo and Oziexplorer with topo's. Much cheaper than Hema navigators but doing the same job at less than $200 each.

Hi Peter

Garmin are the Australian Distributor and have been so for about 3 odd years or so.

Worldwide, they have slowly replaced distributors and taken over themselves. Prior to them taking over in Australia, the sole Australian distributions were through Standard Communications (Makers of the GME Range of UHF Radios and Aerials)

From our dealing now, Standard Communications were a far superior company to deal with on a state basis. Now all calls are directed to their main sales/service headquarters in Sydney.

Cheers

My experiences with STC were not so good and we lived within half an hour of Head Office. It was along while ago, we're talking GPS 75 which cost around $1800 when bought.

'Hardly Normal'

Now that's funny. I myself will never shop at the place again. Have had horrible experiences with their customer service.

After reading the various problems associated with the various GPS units that are available my question is:-

What is the best GPS unit to use when doing the Lap from a current users perspective?

Many thanks for any comments

Yes, that is my problem, what to replace the Garmin with, and I need NZ maps as that is where it is used half the time.

Hi Merv and Di

Like any popular product, there will always be some issues unfortunately and I would say that there will be many more satisfied customers, than those that are not. I still like Garmin as a street navigation unit and they are very user friendly compared to some units on the market. I have been using Garmin for a good few years and have recently updated to a new 2460LT and it is as easy to uses as my old unit with a few more new features.

Time will be the test and I like the Lifetime Map updates feature. When we head bush, I have a Hema HN5 and it is great.

Another cheaper way for more details maps would be this and I would advise it will be a cheap and easy way, with extra add features.

Purchase any good 10" Netbook, which are now sell for under $300. Purchase OziExplorer, the Natmap Topo maps, GPS or Bluetooth Mouse and you will every thing you want in a simple bundle.

In they way, you can record and keep track of your waypoints and track files, use the Internet when you can, keep track of your photos as you travel, write your travel diary and the list goes on.

All the best with what ever you choose.

Cheers

Same results here.

Purchased a Garmin 1490t to go away with last year.

What an absolute piece of junk. If there was a more complicated way to go, it would find it, regardless of route instructions.

Instructions for turns given very late and often on roads that did not exist.

The only good feature was the fuel calculator.

Sold it immediately on return home on fleabay.

Since purchased a Uniden Trax5000 and have found it excellent.

Comparing the Garmin with the Uniden is like comparing a Kia with a MB.

Garmin, never again.
