We are currently in Tasmania and looking to travel down the west coast from Marrawah to Arthur river and down to Corinna and Zeehan. I understand we have to cross the Pieman river, by ferry, at Corinna. The combined length of our l/cruiser and c'van is approx 13.5 meters. Can anyone confirm or otherwise if we will fit on this ferry.? Are there any other crossings we should be concerned about?. The c'van is a high clearance Phoenix.

Pretty sure that you will have to bypass the ferry, max length is 9.0 metres combined wheelbase.

Hi. My brother had this problem in January. Pretty sure it is 9 metres overall. They ended up going down through the centre and across to Strahan that way. Bob

Lonely Planet says there is a 9m overall length limit so it means you will have to turn left at Corinna and go via Waratah to the Murchison Highway.
We did the trip from Stanley to Zeehan via the coast road and returned the same day to Stanley where we had left our van. We had some trepidation about the coast road but we were traveling and kept seeing an Hyundai Getz so obviously unduly worrying. Our 4wd was needed in some of the tracks to the side of the coastal track.
It was a long drive in one day but was necessary to tick the ferry box.
Enjoy your trip.

And they are very strict about the length. They use to allow longer until someone complained. We took our camper over last year, I think we were close to 9 metres. Loved Arthur River, fantastic camping grounds. Make sure you visit the aboriginal rock engravings on the beach. very unique being on a beach.

From corinna.com.au ......

The carrying capacity is 6.5 tonnes, the maximum vehicle measurements are 2.46 m wheel base and 2.50 m body width. The maximum combination wheel base is 9.0 m and the minimum caravan under body clearance 0.2 m. Any questions about the barge operations can be made by contacting us.

Hi Ian

We were at Corinna 2 Xmas's ago and my friends had a Padjero and I'm guessing at about a 20 ft 4 wheel caravan. The ferryman looked at it and gave it ago and as long as the front set of wheels on the van was on the main deck the rear wheels can be on the ramp,it just fitted.

Its a great drive down the west coast road you wouldn't want to miss it and when you get to the ferry if it dosn't fit then just take the other road up through Waratah then down through Rosebury which is suitable for a van.

Regards Peter

I suppose it depends who,s operating the ferry on the day your there.

What I was suggesting was just go there and if you get knocked back then just take the other road through Waratah which is a great drive in itself with a few free camps along the way.
