What time of year do you reckon it is almost a guarantee the GRR will be open to all traffic, ie hire car company cars? Cheers

May/June, but nothing can be guaranteed. Over the past few years, rain has come at unusual times. In 2010 there was rain in May which i recall delayed the opening of the GRR, and some rain during June in 2007 and 2008 caused short term road closures. Depths of rivers for a particular rig may be an issue early in the season.

August, for the Gibb. But no guarantees ever about the road up to Kalumbaru &
Mitchell Falls. Cheers, Kevin :)

It is never open to hire car company cars (unless they are 4WD).
Cheers,

We arrived in
Kununurra last year on the 14 June and the road to
Mitchell Falls and
Kalumburu were closed. We then went to
Broome via the highway and by the time we got to
Broome at the end of June those roads had opened. We then did the Gibb back to
Kununurra. Hope that helps. kevin

Thanks for the replies, my parents are hiring a 4wd but there are conditions about when you can drive on the GRR and the Bungle Bungle. I reckon they should go latish June to decrease the risk of missing out. Cheers, Tim

The point of the ExplorOz Road Condition reports is to answer this exact question- if you to to the
WA/Kimberley Region page -
you'll see the
Gibb River Road section contains a report for each section of the road along with a historical averages chart that shows which months the section of road has been in which status - closed, caution, 4WD, Open.
eg. like this - Image Could Not Be Found
each chart shows the period of historical data collection (ie. this one since 2007) so should be a the best indicator for your trip planning.

Oh, also we answer this question in each of our Trek Notes.
Eg. On our
Gibb River Road Trek Note (and for all trek notes) we give a chart to show Best time to Travel. Here is a copy of what's shown on the GRR page - Image Could Not Be Found
