Hello We are planning to travel around the Gulf in July. Could anyone please give an update on the availability of fuel throughout the area. Is
Hells Gate still open or not? We will be travelling Adels Grove - Kingfisher
Camp then westwards to
Borroloola and then north to
Roper Bar and across to
Mataranka.
Thanks for everyones help. Travel safe people. Greg & Di

I travelled from
Roper Bar to
Burketown in 2009. I dont remember if
Hells gate was open or not when i went through, but, as you dont mention what sort of 4wd you have and how many litres your tank carries or whether it petrol or diesel, most
places carry fuel. Id say nearly every place that tourists go to will sell fuel. If you want to, just carry a jerry can just in case. Distances between stops isnt all that big. 700 -800km maybe.
have fun.

Just a word of warning, do not fill up at
Cape Crawford.
Borroloola is only about 120 k’s further on and it is a lot cheaper. When we were there in 2010 the diesel at
Cape Crawford was $1.95 a litre and at
Borroloola it was $1.75. (As
well the Irish backpacker staff at
Cape Crawford had an attitude problem, maybe just sick of people commenting on the fuel price.) The servo on the left at the end of the town is a good one and it has a
well stocked hardware store. (We could not go via
Hells Gate on this trip as the road was still closed.) Kevin

Hell's
Gate was open last year when we drove through there (friends got fuel there on our trip and we grabbed some ice creams and a stubby cooler), i have a longrange tank so fueled at
Normanton before leaving, and didn't need to refuel until i got to
Borroloola after going through
Lawn Hill, and Kingfisher
Camp along the way.
Borroloola wasn't as expensive as i expected it to be from memory, though i still managed to clock up $300 on the bowser....lol
