Hi David. We travelled that way last year up to the ExploreOz national gathering at Silverton. From Hay up to Ivanhoe is sealed and quite a reasonable road. A forum member told us that Ivanhoe to Menindee was a pretty good dirt road but after we towed our van towards Menindee for about 10k we decided that it was way to rough for us and returned to Ivanhoe and continued up the Cobb Hwy to Willcannia. This road was mainly dirt but was in far better condition than the Menindee one, with a few rough patches over the 170 odd Kms.
When we met the forum member at Silverton he still thought the road was pretty good but he was not towing anything. (Our van is over 2 tonne) so our opinions were rather oposite.
After Silverton we went down to Menindee and the road from Broken Hill is tar all the way and in good condition. We tested the Menindee road to Pooncarie but thought it was too rough for us (although we had spoken to a fellow in the C/P who had brought a dual wheel poptop up it) so we went back up to Broken Hill and down the Silver City Hwy to Wentworth and Mildura. Maybe if we had let our tyres down it may have been better but as we had never been out that way it was worth the extra driving to see the varied countryside.
Hope that helps. Cheers,Bob

G'day again. Did not see too much in the way of camping in Ivanhoe but it was a quick visit and Saturday lunch time so most places except the Supermarket, were closed. We found Hay showground a really good place to stop. Only had the one night there but it was really nice with the atmosphere of a country town. Penrose Park at Silverton was another good venue for a stop. Also down in Menindee we stayed at their Menindee C/P which was OK but on our last day found a park at Copi Hollow which looked like a great place to stay. The was also plenty of free camping on the roads out to the main wall but they were also chock a block with free campers. Kinchega National Park is also another good venue if you don't have a pet. Cheers,Bob.

I certainly wouldn't want to drag a caravan along the Ivanhoe to Menindee road after rain David.
