Hi All,

I am looking at an 08/2000 build 78 4.2L 11 Seat Troopy at an Adelaide dealer. It has steel bull bar, Cargo Barrier and Air. It's ex Defence and has 24,000k's. Dealer is asking $39,000. Looks good to me and drives OK. Looking for opinions on value for money. Are there any common issues with these that I should be checking up on?

Many Thanks!

Evening Steven

This is what I did 3 years ago.

I went to Fowles vehicle auctions in Melbourne and bought a 3 yr old 75 series Troopy.

It was a 1hz diesel, clear rear (no seating), milford cargo barrier, TJM bull bar with warn 9000 winch, air and a few other things. Oh! it was an ex Vic Govt Department of Natural Resources and Environment vehicle with 30,000kms on the clock and was built in Oct 1997.

Got it for $28,000.

Dealers were all over the auction place, however wouldn't go over $27,000 as there was ' nothing in for them' if they had to buy them over $27,000.

The one I bought was the only one sold that day out of six put up for auction.

Maybe I was done like a dinner. However as it cost $54,000 to buy the same thing brand new I really couldn't give a bleep and reckon I am ahead by a mile.

So! ecstrapolate that experience out over your machine and figure out where you fit into it.

Only you can make that decision.

Regards

Ken Robinson

Hi StevenL,

On dec 10th I bought a 2002 GU st Patrol 4.2td cab chassis with plenty of extras (bullbar, towbar, cruise control, etc. at the gov auctions.
I also live in SA & checked the gov. auctions for a couple of months & got a great car for a great price $36,000 incl gst ($54,000) new without the extras.
The car yards will tell you that they give you a warranty........ oh & they wash the car for the thousands of dollars that they add to the price....... perhaps the car was only bought last week at the auctions? Do you really want to give away your money?
Check out the auctions www.auctions.sa.gov.au
You can search the last 8 weeks sales prices too, you will not regret it, just look at the books & check the service history, ring the place that serviced it in the books!

Good looking rig in the pic. I didn't know you could get power windows in a troopy. I've not seen a chrome/silver grille/indicator surround before either. Looks the goods.

I just checked the auction site. This vehicle went for $37,300. That is much better than the deal that I was looking at.

After much umming and ahhring and budgeting I placed an order for a brand new TD GXL 120 Prado Manual. ($58K on road, I got it for $53,500 with Alloy bar fitted free). While there was more rear carrying space in the Troopy I was not sure I could live with the agricultural cabin as I am looking to keep the rig about 8-10 years.

Thanks for all the advice. I I had not done the deal on the Prado last Friday I would most likely have been bidding on that Troopy on Wednesday!

Now I just have to wait till April to take delivery. Seems everbody wants a Prado!

I see, I see!

Keep this up and you may qualify for Cooper Pale!

I did like the idea of walking into a dealer and getting a warranty but is it worth another $5 to 10k for them to drive it from the auction house to their yard and give it a detail?

Maybe I will spend the time and look at the auctions.

Steven,

You said "I did like the idea of walking into a dealer and getting a warranty

If you buy a late model it's under manufactures warranty anyway. Most cars these days are 3yr/100k. Thats the beauty of buying a late model at auction, it's still under warranty!!

Leroy (VB will be fine)

The government auctions are the only ones for me as they have a good assortment of late model vehicles, some of the other auctions are full of crap!

Isn't Eric, a member, a car wholesaler in Melbourne? I reckon his sign off is 'Venus Bay'.

(I seem to recall that he has been away on hols recently.)

However, I would be giving him a call also. He recently did the right thing by me on some accesories & was very good to deal with.
