Hello everyone, We were wondering the best way to travel from
Geraldton to Kalgoorlie in WA Considering travelling to MtMagnet to Leinster then down to Kalgoorlie. Is there a better way going down towards
Perth then accross via Merredin,
Southern Cross then to
Coolgardie thanks johno

Gidday
Depends on a few things ... like what time of the year, is time of the essence? If you have an overnight stop do you need a hotel, a caravan park or a
bush camp? Do you like to drive through wheatbelt country or mallee and mulga scrub.
Google maps says it is something over 900k through Merredin and over 1000 via Mt Magnet. If you choose the former you will pass through quite a few small towns the other way is the wide red land ...
Either way would have appeal for me, but that's me.
Cheers
Rocco

Hey mate I live out this way and travel to and from Gero and kalgoorlie, the safest way with regular fuel and the best sealed roads is Gero to
yalgoo, then to , magnet to
sandstone,
sandstone to Leinster 650km, then Leinster to
Leonora then
Menzies and kal. 370 km Every town mentioned has good regular fuel. This is the truck route to and from
mine sites so lots of passing traffic if you break down. Take lots of water, basic spares and food! But if you want to off road you could take the above routes mentioned but be
well prepared as it may be a few days before another vehicle comes by! The dirt roads are closed very regularly due to heavy rains and roads flood alot. Even the sealed ones! If it's wet weather do not drive off the tracks as the solid looking sand soon turns to quicksand! Cheers!

Derek Jones suggestion above is the best if you want to see a bit along the way, great drive in the winter especially if the weather is good. I did it a few years back as a shortcut and suprizingly really enjoyed it.
Great little "real" country towns along the way, not full of arty farty type shops and overpriced cafes/pubs/accomodation.
If towing and in a hurry,
well take whatever google/GPS etc tells you is shortest/quickest.
