At one of those dreaded centrestands in the shopping mall I saw a framed copy of a map of Australia titled " The Discovery and Exploration of Australia 1519 to 1901" compiled by H E C Robinson 1927 and it had the tracks of numerous explorers, some of whom I'd never heard of, drawn in. I reacted the way women do to chocolate and men do to sex. Got to have it - it's soo bootiful.
Trouble is that he won't sell an unframed copy, only the $275 model.

Went to a site
http://www.nla.gov.au/apps/cdview/nla.map-vn4693185&mode=moreinfo
and if seems possible to get a copy except that I can't get it in the cart and I don't know exactly what i'm getting.
Has anyone ever got one of these maps ?

I just went to the site you quoted then clicked on "Order" on top right menu, then on "Continue" in the pop-up menu, then if you click on the small image of the map you can see a larger version (took a minute to load), then follow the bouncing ball to checkout. Looks like a fantastic map, I am going to buy a Large format Photocopy for $16.50

There are also options for $45.00 per image in Tiff or Jpeg format
$50.00+ for photographic prints or custom reproductions

NRK, are you expecting the large format copy to be in B & W.
What do you think a custom reproduction would consist of?

The Large format Photocopy is colour and according to the "More Information" page, the original is 143cm x 143cm, I have no idea what a custom reproduction would be but I'm sure that if you went to "Contact Us" on the menu you could ask them directly, also if you go to This Link you can actually print the map yourself and if you know someone with a large format printer you could print it at what ever size you want.

WOW....!
got to have one of those....
Just tried to order the photocopy.... and the website went down... bummer!
will try again later. $16.50 for a colour copy is a bargain really, especially when you consider what some places charge for copies of A3 or larger.

If the copy is 147cm x 147cm (stated size of the map), that would be awesome indeed.

Fred,
the copy i saw was about 60 cm w x 80cms and he said that even an unframed one would cost $ 75 if he could even get one, so i think that 147 x 147 is going to cost a lot more than $16.50. That's why i found the order website confusing.
Can you let me know what you actually get?

yes Min, i'd liketo know what the story is if you go to the NLA.
I presume it's in Canberra.

On the NLA site, I searched "H E C Robinson" and there seems to be a book that he wrote covering exploratory sea journeys (as well as land).
The NLA site (orders) is confusing and just bogs down. Maybe direct contact with the staff is an easier way to get a copy of the map.

OK everyone,
here is the deal... after several attempts, I spoke to the mapping section just a few minutes ago...
If you placed an order for the large format colour copy for $16.50..
you will get an A0 or A1 size copy of the map, depending on their ability to produce a quality copy and their ability to produce it at the correct scale. I have been told, subject to above, that a A0 print will be the most likely size considering the original is 143cm x 143cm. (and all for $16.50 + postage)

Four (4) orders have already been placed; so if you want a copy, I suggest you get your order in now. That will save time as they will do a single print run and get your order out to you sooner, rather than later.
Hope this helps.

Hi Fred,
Goodness knows what size we'll end up getting because it seems to be a bit conflicting. The lady said it would not be full size (143x143 is big!) but I understood it may come as more than one sheet. Whatever, it will be great to have.

Hi all,

I went to the Library this afternoon and saw the original. Yes, it will be great to have a copy on the wall at home. The size of the print will be limited by the printer and I was under the impression that it would come in sections to be glued together by the purchaser. The size of the tube would also be a limitation, I imagine, as the larger the tube the higher the postage cost. It's great value at $16.50 whatever the size. The Library does not make any profit. You have to order online.

If you like maps visit the Map Room (down stairs) at the Library when next in Canberra. I love going there. There is a big room where all kinds of atlases, including a vast number of fairly current Australian and overseas road atlases and gazetteers are available to browse. And the staff are friendly and helpful.

I have not for one minute regretted moving here nearly eight years ago. Don't believe all the rubbish you hear about it, come and see for yourself. It's not all hot air, especially at this time of the year LOL.

Hi everyone,
I know there is some confusion, depending on who you talk to.... BUT I spoke to the guy who is actually going to make the copies, and he was actually familiar with the map to be copied, he knew it's size etc... he was the one who said it would copied onto a single sheet.... I can only go with what he told me. Everyone else I spoke to gave different answers, so I asked to speak to the person who would actually do the copies. Hence the several attempts to contact him.

Whatever the end result, it will be an impressive map. Can't wait to recieve it.

Great work. Fred.
In order to be on the same page as you, because you seem to be getting the goods, can you tell me exactly what you ordered on the website.
Do I take it that they send it in a tube?

The ordering site is terrible - contrast it with Amazon.

I can't even get it to load properly.

Gooday werewasi,
click on the order link at top of page
click continue
select whole item
click add to cart

You should have this on screen:
The discovery and exploration of Australia, 1519 to 1901 by sea and land [cartographic material] / Creator: H.E.C. Robinson Ltd Publisher: Sydney : H.E.C. Robinson Ltd., [1927?]

Click - proceed to order details
Under "Order", select the dropdown menu "I would like" and select "large format photocopy"
In special instructions place: Do not fold, post in tube please.... It should show a cost of $16.50

Then click on declaration of use and follow instructions.

When you get to the payment, an you click to pay.... DO NOT WORRY if the web site just goes into never never land or outer space.... DO NOT CLICK BACK

Wait for the page to finish.... this could take some time
If it comes up with error... try again later... DO NOT CLOSE THE PAGE
Just let it sit..... Check your emails.... In approx 20 min you should recieve an email confirming your order (even though the site said it failed)
Once you have your email, you can exit the web site....

Have fun
regards

Thanks for that
You are the repository of a lot of knowledge.

I seem to recalll that you recently posted guff on the gearbox used in the new Ford Ranger and it's relationship tp the Mustang box.
There was a US site which had about a year's posts on it by disgruntled Mustang owners but more contributions were barred.
Have you any info on just where the rectification programme is at now.

and if you have the post no. that would be appreciated because i couldn't pick it up searching. It may even have been in relation to a BT50 and not the ranger. I'd like to read it again.

You talked earlier abouta $16.50 copy which i suspect would only be A4 sized.
Was the one you got about $50.00? When you say "paper" do you mean poster card?

Hi All,
my order arrived on Wednesday last week, but I was away until Sunday night, so only saw it today.
Very Impressive.
All I need now is the time to study it, and work out how I am going to mount it.
