A GERMAN tourist has been attacked by a
dingo on Fraser Island and airlifted to hospital.
The 23-year-old was with a group staying at the K'Gari Education Centre, north of Happy Valley, but had wandered away from the main camping ground when the attack occurred.
He suffered serious bite and
puncture wounds to the legs, arms and head and was treated at the scene by the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter intensive care paramedic before being flown to
Hervey Bay hospital in a stable condition.
Ross Belcher, from the Department of National Parks, said the attack occurred after the man became disoriented and fell asleep on a track.
"This incident serves as an ongoing reminder that dingoes are wild animals and need to be treated as such,'' said Mr Belcher in a statement.
"The way to avoid such incidents is for all people to follow the department's
dingo safety messages.''
Mr Belcher said rangers had increased their patrols in response to the incident.
