Looking for a
camping spot between
Tamworth and NSW north coast to meet family for a weekend
camping. Dalmorton has been suggested as somehwere more accessible for those in cars. We will have a couple of teenage boys, is there anything to entertain them such as white
water canoeing/ rubber tubes. We oldies will probably look for some good walks. We will have a 4WD and would also like to know if there are any decent scenic forest/ NP drives or walks in the region.
Thank you in advance.
Mark

A better spot in the same region would be the Mann river rec reserve. Closer to Glen Innes, bitumen most of the way and plenty of waterholes to play in. I was there last weekend and found it very good.
The rest of the old
Grafton road was in good condition. I had a quick look at the campground at Dalmorton and though it looked ok was glad I'd stayed at the Mann. The Mann reserve is free as
well.
Great
views from Tommy Rock
lookout if you have a 4wd. Access from Narrow pass fire trail.

or Cloud's
Creek near Nyboida.
Free camp and near the canoeing centre on the road from Armidale to
Grafton.

"Nymboida" that is.
We did have a snoop around Dalmorton on a very wet, miserable day so couldn't do a lot of snooping but the impression was there wasn't a great deal to do, although the surroundings were pleasant enough.
Agree, the Mann River is a good spot, whereas
Nymboida,on the canoeing side is ore structured. Perhaps Mann River is better esp if you have your own gear.

Thanks Steve, we pass Clouds Ck often at the bottom of the big
hill on our way to the North Coast. Used to be a good place to pull up after the dirt road shaking down from
Ebor!

Hi Mark,
There have been a couple of positive comments on these pages in recent weeks re the caravan
park at Jackadgery west of
Grafton on the Gwyder Highway.
The Mann River Caravan
Park is under new management, according to a google search, so might be worth consideration.
Cheers, Bruce.

we stayed at Dalmorton a few weeks ago, if you plan to take a camper trailer then IMHO the sites are mostly not suitable for them (on big slopes and very small) but there were 2 sites that you could get a camper trailer set up on no worries (just hope the largest one doesn't have a small dome tent set up on it like when we visited there). on the other hand, the large grassey area for tent
camping that is bollarded off is quite nice though, fairly flat and a couple of fire rings with logs to sit on etc..amazingly it was empty whilst we were there. the place would make a good escape for a weekend, but there isn't a whole heap to do there really.
the drive along the Old
Grafton / Glen Innes Rd is scenic the whole way,
well worth doing IMHO. the road itself was in very good condition when we drove it, due to how windy the road is allow to be doing 30 - 40 kph along most of it as you can't see around the blind corners.
if you checkout my trip report i did on our 4wd clubs
forum, it will give you an idea of what's along that road to see http://
forum.themotleycrew.com.au/index.php?topic=865.0 Day 4 is where we head to this area, apparently it's not a convict built tunnel you drive through along the road, was built by a road crew at a later date instead so i have since found out.

Thanks Rumpig, was looking forward to Dalmorton as we were told there were some good drives and walks up into the Chealundi & Guy Fawkes NP. Also been told the river levels are weel down at the moment. Might have to resort to
Pebbly Beach instead, not much to do there other than sit, talk and drink!

i have seen someones trip report from Chealundi and it looks like a great spot to visit, the only reason we didn't go through there was i read somewhere a key might be needed for some gates along the way (available at a info. centre somewhere i remember reading). not sure how current that information was, so we didn't risk going that route.
you could still spend a nice weekend at Dalmorton, but it's not somewhere i'd plan on spending an extended period longer then that myself. as for rivers being down on height, yes it was pretty dry around those parts when we were there.
cheers.
