Hi All,
We have a Jayco Freedom Expanda 2001 with a
toilet and shower, 18ft closed/26ft expanded fitted with twin 80lt
water tanks. Our issue is, we only seem to be able to use 40 litres of
water before the pump runs dry/loses all pressure.
If we keep a mains pressure hose running in the filler spout, we have a continuous flow of
water through the 12 volt pump.
We have checked breathers and also checked for air locks, this is not our problem. Please help!!!!!!!!!!

You have indicated that you have checked the breathers. It sounds like a breather/vent issue to me. It would appear that the tank/s aren't completely filling.
A simple no cost exercise would be to simply pull the vent line/s off the tank/s and then try filling the tank/s again.

This must be one of the most common problems with vans. More than likely the
tank vents. The lines cannot have the slightest dip or the trapped
water will cause an air lock. An idea is to put fittings on the drain lines and pressure fill from the bottom.

Hi Len,
I presume that the tanks have performed correctly in the past, therefore it almost certain that the breathers are blocked, possibly by the work of a mud-wasp. Such a blockage can be hard to see and is not easily cleared.
How have you checked the breathers?
Try forcing
water back through them. If it does not flow freely then there is a blockage. If it is the work of a mud-wasp then this action probably will not clear the mud blockage, it will be necessary to push a wire through the breather tubing or remove it from the van entirely to clear it. Whilst the tubing is removed it should be possible to fill the tanks to confirm that there is no other problem.
Finally, if the problem is the work of a mud-wasp, protect the outer end of the breathers with insect mesh to prevent a repeat performance.

i agree with alan b it will most likely be mud wasp or paper wasp but to ensure they are perfectly clean remove the air vents to check and clean them before putting insect screen over them
and like suggested fill the both tanks while the vents are off
it may take a bit of time but your efforts will be rewarded with no more future problems apart from checking the insect screen mesh that you put on the vents down the track as it too can block up with rd dust/mud causing a simular problem

This has been a ongoing problem for years, with Jayco the vent line usually terminated below the fillet inlet, so mud wasps should not be a problem.
Camec sell one way valves plastic ones, buy 2 and cut the breather line as close to the
tank as possible, install 2 tee pieces with short piece of tube on each one, install the one way valves, one to let air into the
tank when pumping and one to expel air when filling, this time use mesh or fly screen to keep the MUD wasps out on each one.
Or
When you fill wrap a clean cloth around your hose and push it against the filler inlet and pressure fill the
tank until the
water forces the water/air out of the breather tube.

Same here, im not impressed at all on the hoses, anyway in desperation i cut both breather hoses off and pushed a little tap into the hose from Bunnings. We open it when filling and using the
water. Now we are able to fill the tanks up properly. Its a bit of fiddling but hey when being used we are on holidays who cares.
