Regassing air con.

Recently purchased a second hand 4yo van - seems the air con needs regassing. :-(

Well - we are assuming that's why it's not cooling after being told it was 'freezing'. (checked it out today while it is 'warm' outside)

Any tips on DIY or reputable places to have it done around the Blue Mountains? It's a split system Heron wall type.

We recently regassed a car in Canada with a $20 canister, bought in the local hardware and the fitting fit straight into the line. It worked a treat in high summer on a road trip from Montreal QC to Orlando Florida in a 7 seater fully occupied, no problems.

I dont understand what's the big hoo ha here in Australia with DIY - well maybe I do......

Anyway - any suggestions appreciated.

Caroline

The Air Command site lists service agents in Sydney, Liverpool and Penrith.... may be of use.
As for not cooling - low gas is only one of the possible causes. An expert technician at a fair price might be the smartest move.

Thanks Darian - funnily enough - I checked on line with a search for "Air Command Penrith NSW" = 0 results. Will have another try.

They have approved service agents (not Air Command branches) - the Penrith flag is Mark Edwards 0401 515 952. That said, I'm not suggesting you necessarily need the Air Command connection - any bonafide air conditioning technician should be able to help .....I think here too, but certainly elsewhere, Air Command get mixed reports on quality re customer service - haven't had to try them myself yet - our Ibis is still happy.

If it's freezing it would be the thermostat, not gas.
Is the compressor motor running ? You can hear it from outside, if it's low on gas a low pressure switch won't allow it to run and self destruct.

Does it seem to work and then after a short while stop and slowly get warm.?

If that's what it's doing then it's the thermostat not switching off and allowing the Evaporator ( the bit up in the van ) to freeze into a solid block of ice

Try turning the temp control back a bit to half way and see what it does.

This will be one of the first tests an aircond tech will do any way, before he / she connects their test gauges to the system.

Thanks Ron - very helpful. It did seem to work better when I again tried it a bit later. Anyway it works, but thank you anyway - that's helpful. I'll keep that piece of info on hand.

Why do you need a regas..... gas just doesn't leak out or is used up like petrol, if it leaks out there has to be a leak.

If you tyres kept going down would you....
A) keep on pumping them up.
B) Take them to reputable tyre place for repairs.
C) By a can of miracle seal and hope it' works.
D) Ask Dazza down at the local pub.

The big question is do you want it done right and pay the price or do you want it done cheap and then complain....

Not all places who advertise do it right.

And by the way not everyone who does air conditioning are licensed to do caravans.

I'm sure this thread will get very interesting.

As for the $20 canisters..... good to see so many experts.

Anyone who handles refrigerants other than hydrocarbons has to be licensed, be qualified and have had to passed a test.

How much do you understand about refrigeration?

How do you know its a gas issue?

When you're in the industry assumptions are dealt with day in and day out..... especially by the experts on the phone telling us what is wrong and how to fix it.

"No more to say" is one of those stupid remarks that should be placed in a deep deep hole along with "don't worry there is always someone worse off than you"...... never to be seen again.

At Least Alan below has a bit of an understand unlike some who can only criticize when it goes over one's head.

BTW.... I'm not having a dig at you but refrigeration is what they class as a complex system involving chemical, electrical and mechanical sub systems all working together.

Refrigeration is simple until it doesn't work.

A caravan system is all hard lined in copper and the only place it may leak is at the flared fittings or a component that has been damaged or corroded...... there are no rubber seals.

A bit about DIY cans...... all automotive systems have a set amount of refrigerant in them that's determined by the manufacturer, this amount is measured in grams and kilograms, modern systems run what they call lean systems meaning they are designed for the least amount of refrigerant as needed, these systems are very easy to overcharge and in some 100 grams too much is enough to cause problems.

Plus it is illegal to top up systems in Australia and has be for the last 5 years.

The other thing is there is 4+ refrigerants used in caravan systems and each is not compatible to one and other..... bit like mixing petrol and diesel together.

Hi Caroline,

What you need to consider is the reason for the air con to need re-gassing in the first place. It can only need refrigerant added if some has leaked out. Unless the leak is found and corrected then any newly-added refrigerant will in turn also leak out in time.

Maybe your Canadian experience was a sufficient re-gas to temporarily overcome a slow leak. I don't know.

What is your reference to "DIY hoo ha" in Australia? Not being able to purchase DIY refrigerant? If so then that is because Australia is taking a responsible standpoint on the release of halogens into the atmosphere.

I agree with Darian that an expert refrigeration technician might be the best move in the long run. Try looking here.

Cheers
Allan

Thank you Allan. Your advice is appreciated. From previous experiences - not so sure about the 'expert' tag.

I had this reply ready to go and just thought I'd re-check the thread. Firstly, don't assume I am STUPID (quoted words) just because I happen to be a woman and heaven forbid - have an opinion and dare to ask a question on this forum. Do you assume I am stupid because I am a woman?

"I'm not having a dig at you" Really? Calling me stupid is not a "dig at me"? Really? How could I possibly be able to understand the complex mechanical, electrical and chemical sub systems involved - you might be surprised!

Well - indeed there have been many differing opinions.

Here's the thing:
a) on second use for about an hour as opposed to 1/2 hour - the air con seems fine YAY!!

b) there a many helpful people here - thank you (I'll know where to go when and if I need to, again)

c) Australia will not solve the entire worlds problems via a 'tax' or stitching up DIY when there are .........

(via any industry where 'licensed' usually means 'closed shop', and is brought about by an over regulated and sometimes corrupt industry body. Take the latest licensing rort where you now need to 'reapply' for your industry licenses under a large industry body - just so you can pay the fee to have a new picture license to operate, no retesting required to show your competence, just PAY YOUR MONEY. Now - ask yourself how I would know who was reputable or competent just because they show me (only if I ask) their photo ID. That's money making industry closed shop crap if I ever saw it. And then - ask yourself how would I know this?)

.........1.3 b people in China
1.2 b in India
314 m in USA (who by the way have the highest number of and some of the oldest nuclear power stations in the world - so go ahead and worry about my can of DIY)
237 m in Indonesia
193 m in Brazi, to name a few of the top populations of the world - who in the majority don't pay a carbon tax or care one iota what they are doing to the environment.
22 m (at best) people in Australia doing DIY air con re-gassing and paying a carbon tax will not make one iota of difference.

Anyone who doesn't believe that there ARE always some people worse off than you OR me shows their true colours.

Thanks again to others all for your helpful responses.

I agree to disagree, but I do not agree that I am stupid.

If you call a government funded organisation a closed shop that nobody in the industry is a member off and we are at loggerheads with then you really need to do your homework before having a go at the people in the industry.

This is a classic example of what we have to deal in day in and day out.... people thinking we are in it to rip people off.

This is a link to the government funded organisation....
http://www.arctick.org/index.php

Good to see your taking words out of context and using to your advantage, I did not call you stupid. I made comment about a stupid remark... not a stupid person.

Funny thing is the good old USA, Canada and the EU are following the Aussie government in their pursuit for a better environment and looks like adopting the very same policy.

You understand very little when it comes to the politics surrounding the environment and refrigerant.

Oh and being a women make very little difference to how you get treated and looked upon.... attitude plays a big part and also accepting legit advice helps.

Maybe you could ring up the Australian Refrigeration Council and tell them what's going on.... you would have me and many others supporting you.
