I was talking to a guy this morning who owns a new 2012 Colorado he has only 3000klm on the clock. He told me that he knows of 2 other people that owns the new Colorado and they have both "blown the turbo" on their vehicles.
Has any one else heard of this kind of thing happening with the new 2.8l Duramax engines?

That's interesting for an engine which has a name Dura - Max. For them it is neither Dura or Max. We wait to see what else happens to the new Fiat Motori engine.
Does anybody know the brand of turbo used on these. To put out big torque the boost has to be quite a bit higher than many other engines doing the same work, therefore the turbo is the bit which is being MAXED.

The old saying, when you continue to cut corners you end up going around in circles cos all the corners are gone.

Thought the new 2.8 was sourced from VM Motori in Italy....... Just because Fiat owns 50% of VM Motori doesn't mean Fiat has any design input.

Me say this is more hyped up internet junk.

How do you know they are cutting corners?

Another thread said it was a VM Motori that was the same as used in a Jeep Wrangler. However, I can't find any reference to that on the net, only that it's a Chev Duramax built in Rayong Thailand.

It is just academic whether Fiat or VM Motori owns what % of the company, it still remains the engine is an Italian engine and GM are, as usual, sourcing from somewhere and they call it a Duramax for marketing reasons. They could call it anything, but Duramax sounds better to the ones who aren't sure of the pedigree and also know of engines already called Duramax.
The vehicle basic design is an Isuzu , that's who. Engine and sheetmetal different on the Colorado.

Snip-its from the net -
Duramax engines used to power the new Colorado are Italian VM Motori designs, similar to those used in some Chrysler products.
GM bought a 50-percent equity in VM Motori from Penske Corporation in 2007.
Penske Corporation sold its remaining equity in VM Motori to Fiat in 2011.

What are they talking about when they say "blown the turbo"?

It's highly likely to be a variable vane turbo, so has the actuator stuck and oversped the turbine?

Has the compressor wheel come off?, or been unbalanced and disintegrated and bits gone into the engine?

Has the oil seal failed and spilled oil outwards?

Has there been an oil leak inwards and caused an overrun by fuelling the engine on engine oil?

Has the computer mapping misread a parameter and oversped the turbine?

Reading Denco Turbo's informative newsheets, they remark on how reliable turbo's are in general. They are not fragile things with magical and mysterious powers to save the world, to be treated with kid gloves. Sure they need to be respected and taken care of, but in normal use, the turbo components are remarkably reliable.

All kinds of things can happen to new cars so who knows what will develop in this case. It may be far too early to tell at this stage. One thing is certain though, the dealers will send reports to the factory and a problem like that will not be ignored.

The first major problem like this that I can remember was three new 179 EH Holdens breaking connecting rods in their engines. I fixed one myself under warranty and two apprentices attending North Sydney TAFE with me said they had seen one at the dealers they worked for. It did not go on to be a known fault with those cars and there was no factory recall.

Another was two near new HJ Holden Statesman that were towed in at work with the passenger side front damaged. The power steering had instantly spun the steering wheel around onto full left hand lock while the car was cruising along the road in a straight like. Fortunately the speed was low in both cases. Once again they were the only two I ever heard of and there was no recall.

Thanks to all for your input. I don't know what he ment by "blown the turbo", it could be any of the things mentioned. I was just wondering if anyone had heard of any trouble with these engines before I go and spend my hard earned.

Thanks,

Maybe consider a Dmax. The power and torque figures are a bit off the Colorado, but I think the Colly's figures are a bit high for a 2.8 for what my opnion is worth.
New Dmax has plenty of torque. I'm happy with mine.

Hey Bruce, hows is your Dmax going? We are really happy with ours. We have had a few friends drive ours and then have gone out and bought one. Starting to see quite a few now on the road in Darwin.
About to go into ARB and spend some $$$ .

Is that a factory bullbar on yours I can see in the picture? No one seems to have released them yet.

The bar is from MCC (just google mcc bull bars) cost $1500 including the three protection plates. Getting the canopy fitted on Tuesday at ARB, hoping the ARB tradies rack will fit over the roof bars. Having draws made by Drifta, will be done on the 10th December in Gloucester.
Will be up your way around the end of April next year, be staying with my cousin out at Dundee Beach for a few days than a few days in Darwin before heading to the Kimberley.

Ok, might see if I can catch up with you. ARB Darwin have sent a photo of my truck to ARB HQ about the canopy trade rack and how it will fit in conjunction with the roof rails too. Will let you know what they say.
