I don't know if this is proper but here goes.

The book about Toots is available on this site. The reason I have posted this is because so many now drive the Cape and don't know what it was like and some of the real people that travelled it in those days.

I have more respect for Toots and Ron than many can imagine. If you want a good honest read have a look. If any doubt how tough Toots was I can assure you she was a tough as nails.

I cant see anything wrong with that post RA.
It concerns an interesting life story of an Australian bush identity, nothing wrong there.

Thanks for the heads up RA.

Cheers, Bruce.

I hate reading books and can honestly say I have read 3 books in my lifetime and Toots book was one of them.

I loved the book and having been to the Cape twice now it makes it that much better to relate too and follow her passion for the top end.

Cheers Steve

Vince M,
I remember getting one incredible serve from Toots at Archer River. That would have been around the mid 80's carting some machinery to Weipa. She was quite upset that we had cut up her road.

I first meet Toots about 1975 when I came across her broken down on the track. Wonderful person with a never say I am defeated attitude.

If people have the time when in the Alice drop into the Trucking Hall of Fame and have a look at her old 25-280 MAN.

G'day Rockape/Vince M

Again an amazing post (for me anyway), I rarely look at the goods being sold on any of the Forums that I tend to dabble in and ExplorOz is no exception.

The scrolling side banner "Top Sellers" has only now caught my attention ~ then the proverbial penny dropped.

I too had met the woman known as Toots at the Mount Carbine pub some time back in 1981, although there was nothing cordial in the actual meeting, by this I mean she had a verbal go at driver of the "Yella Piss Ant" that was parked up where she always parked her truck up, all the blokes in the pub at the time laughed their heads off because I was the "Piss Ant's" owner/driver and this being my wifes trusty bright yellow Lj 80V Suzuki 4wd.

It took a very long ---- long time for the boys to stop ribbing me about that episode, the boys in question were my workmates at the R.B Mining Tungsten (woolfram ?) mine across the road from the pub, we had to clear the mine site when there was a major blast in the pit.

Maybe, just maybe I will one day organize the Grey areas in my past life by digitally storing my 5000 odd ~ 35 mil colour slides, for my grand sons of course !!

Thanks again for the trip down memory lane.

Safe travels :

Joe,
I can just see Toots standing there in her boob tube, dress and no knickers on and her hands on her hips calling your pride a joy a "yella piss ant"

All the best,
RA.

G'day Rockape

Well mate you have just effectively poisoned my very faded mental image of "Toots" ~ as I rememembered her, but I'll never forget the moment.

I did the honourable thing and moved the Zook and went home, quickly and stayed rather quiet !!

I did hear (some time later) that "Toots" gave her oldman a hiding, over his effort or lack of it when tying the load down on the trailer.

Now for some images from the past.

I've managed to part with a hand full of dollars, bought a gadjet that scans and uploads slides to digital images, now I can rake up some demons from the past, I trust on one minds.

had the pleasure of meeting her in 83` at Musgrave roadhouse , its hardly a roadhouse
but !! , she was wearing a skirt !! singlet top , and barefeet , barefeet like I have never seen ,
the other drivers at the time told us that she mixes it with the blokes as good as any
one and that was just talking about changing tyres , she is one of the legends of the
trucking industry , Go TOOTS

Toots MAN Prime Mover now resides at the Winton Diamantina HeritageTruck & Machinery Museum in Central Qld and has been there for over a 1.5 years as far as I know. Visited there 11/2011.

Cheers Kev.

Kev,
Thanks for that info.

They must have moved the truck from the Alice to Winton.

Here is a photo of her in the Alice in 2009.

I'll be buggered!!!

I walk up to the truck museum every morning, to take the dogs for a walk, and to "inspect" any trucks that are pulled up on the pad, opposite the museum.

Guess I'd better go in for a look. Haven't been in there since the Festival last September.

Bob,
you better keep those dogs close if you get near that truck. It is sure to still have some of her attitude.

When I went to the Winton truck museum it hadn't long opened, so that's a good few years ago now.
