Hi
Iwould like to get some ideas from eperience would be better but any feedback welcome.
JAN 2013 Drivng from Brisbane to Karratha 4 wheel drive ,off road ok but not extream.
Shortest time to drive ie most direct / or shortest time (higher speed) .
Can some one who has done similar trip not too long ago or any who know what will be involved in such a trip ie fuel, supplies etc please enter your feed back.
Directions ,online maps that would show actual route would be great.
Thankyou

Hi John

My trip planner shows 'quickest' via bitumen road and the Barkly highway and over the top as 5,003 kilometres and 60 hours travel.

Choosing 'shortest' and dirt roads it takes the Plenty Highway, then heads north and to WA via the Tanami as 4,868 kilometres and 82 hours.

I cannot find a Planner that includes all outback roads. Even shorter and far smoother than the Tanami would be the Gary Junction Road. So if choosing these type of roads, go via the Plenty, start out on the Tanami and turn of to Papunya and head west on the Gary Junction. You can branch off this and take the more adventurous Talawana Track for a slightly shorter way to Karratha. The bitumen will always be the quickest way when looking at these types of routes.

Have a look at this map. You can drag the route to change it. Click on the petrol pump icon to see fuel stations. If you want to see intermediate stops select 'Directions' and insert the name of a place.

Sorry, if you click on the "Brisbane to Karatha" link at the end of my post it will open a Whereis map of the route. I'm not sure if you are familiar with ExplorOz, but any underlined words are a link to other sites/pages.
I use Whereis to plan my trips because it is so versatile. Also a big plus is that if you are with Bigpond it is a free downloads but Google Map and others count towards your downloads.

Time of year travelling would also make a difference - taking the dirt roads would not be desirable in summer or if any cyclonic rain goes through.

John,

I myself would go bitumen that time of the year. Either via Katherine or the nullabor (similar distance to the pilbara) depending on the tropical lows. You could make the decision very close to your leaving date. Cyclones take a while to brew and there are some good cyclone warning websites like JTWC that indicate tropical lows well in advance.
Bugger the gravel, just imagine yourself in the sun on the Gary Junction fixing your second flat for the day in 47degrees.
Enjoy

I'm puzzled why you can't check these things out yourself.... Pretty basic trip planning information.

There's one road across the continent in the South. It's called the Eyre Highway. Drive from Brisbane to Port Augusta, that's in South Australia.

Drive west a long way until you get to Norseman, that's in WA.

Turn right until you find yourself in Meekatharra, after passing through Wiluna. This is all bitumen. Then turn right at Meekatharra and drive to Karratha.

Find all this at maps.google.com.au

'I'm puzzled why you can't check these things out yourself"

Maybe I am not seeing the big picture but I thought that was why John was asking what he has.

Cheers

Thats possible 'aboutfivebucks', who I note has a jolly decent vehicle!!

But I'm figuring the Exploroz hard working souls don't take phoned in or hand written postings to the forum so jackinabox must've had internet.

Maybe I'm getting all GOM, but back in the days when I started hanging out on this forum, not long after it started, people would look stuff up before having a brilliant idea and just posting requests for all the answers. It's all getting a bit soft me thinks....

And before the internet, we used to have these things called paper maps, and when you're planning a really long trip, you'd have to buy one for each state, (Shell maps were my favourite) spread them out across the floor and have a great time wondering, dreaming, planning and thinking about what you might not know.

GOM rant over....

Hi jackinbox,

there's been a lot of good suggestions but I think the main thing you have to consider is when you're doing the trip.

January is usually hot in the middle and wet in the top half of Aus.

Head from Brisbane to Broken Hill through Gilgandra and Warren.
Turn off at Peterborough to Port Augusta and head west.

It's still a long way and it's still going to be hot but I reckon the conditions would not be as extreme as further north.

My personal favourite would be head to Boulia, across The Plenty to Alice and then west to Karratha by The Gary Junction Rd through Marble Bar, but that'd be way too risky in January.

Have fun,
Steve
