This happened on Monday 26th November 2012. At a roadside rest area
on the Pacific Highway
near Taree NSW.
Camps 6 #89. Four Mile Hill Rest Area.
Rest Area 6 km S of Taree or 21 km N of Nabiac.
Combined truck bay. Northbound only.
Hema map 37 B3 31 52 17 S 152 27 53 N
Overnight stop, Toilets/disabled, tables, Big Rig etc.
My friends were in a SUV and stopped for a toilet break.
The lady went into the F toilet and the man went into the M.
Lady out first and found two persons breaking into their vehicle,
She screamed out and ran to the vehicle, the larger of the two Youths
threw a large rock at her and she fell to the ground and broke her elbow.
By this time the man had emerged and ran to the offenders, The smaller
of the two drew a knife and threatened them, The man was assisting his
lady and the pair smashed three windows[with a steel bar] in the SUV
and reached in and stole the lady’s hand bag. Now they told me that
the attackers were of aboriginal appearance. One had long sleeves and a
mask and the other a scarf around his face.
However this Rest Area backs onto Perfleet the local aboriginal housing
estate.
There were NO other vehicles in the area at the time, five minutes later
One Semi and a caravan pulled in. The local police attended.
Now not all Rest Areas are dangerous BUT be warned.

That's truly horrifyig! I'm from the bush and we don't see bad stuff like that, just goes to show you gotta be on your toes. But you can't go around 24/7 suspecting everyone! Can you????? Zenonie

Bloody good idea Bantam but watch the PC brigade come charging out of the woodwork yelling about discrimination.

Cheers

Bantam, that sounds like a fantastic idea, for folk like us going over there, late at night we wouldn't have a clue where the 'hot' spots are and where they're not, one would expect that if facilities were there, being a rest area it would be OK to stop just for a few moments to spend a penny....... But how can we work it so the people who may be offended by the list would accept it?????? I'm hearing so many stories from over there I'm beginning to wonder if we should just stay in the Western Half of the country...LOL

Simba, our much missed baby.

Unfortunately it is a relatively common occurrence in that rest area and also at others in the area.
The mention of Purfleet is also relevant.

I agree warnings like this are good and where ever you park up keep eyes open, however for a little balance I have been camping for 30+ years, a member of a 4wd club for 7 and a motor holmer with warious groups for 4 and have heard of only 1 direct account of something like this occuring. I have talked to 3 seperate ladies travelling solo and there bigest problem was a flat tyre.

Be aware but don't get paranoid.

I know it's not PC but some of those people mentioned drive from Taree to Forster where they steal a car from an unsuspecting tourist and take it back to Taree. Be warned.

Having grown up just south of Taree, and without getting too contentious, let's just say none of the locals would find this a surprise............

Memory springs a few years back to a couple of poor Scandinavian tourists in a campervan who happened to pull up late one night and in ignorance decided sleep it off on the common at Purfleet..... van was completely trashed and they wound up in the Manning Base Hospital.....

It must have been a horrifying time for the couple, ill cross that place out of my camps book.
