We are hoping to get up to Karijini, Millstream etc next year. Can anyone recommend the best time to go? I am aware that April to October is best, but if someone could narrow it down some more, that would be great! Thanks, Annie
p.s Merry Christmas everyone!!

Hi Annie,
We were there the end of July this year, the weather was perfect, not to hot and all the walks were open. The water in the bottom of some of the gorges was freezing. Just a fantastic place to go, plenty of great walks. I'd go again tomorrow, one of the highlights of our trip
Enjoy Karijini
Regards
Ken

Hi Ken
Thanks for that! I was thinking about going in June, but July sounds good too. Will the waterfalls etc still be flowing then? I don't want to miss anything.
Can't wait to get up there! :)
Regards Annie

Yes they were, but I'm sure a little earlier would be fine

Hi Annie
If for some reason you have to delay your trip, the end of August last year was OK for us. 2011 was a late wet season as well with a cyclone going through the Pilbara region.
Joffre Falls was just a trickle, but the rest of the gorges & falls had plenty of water in them.

At Millstream NP, Python Pool had swimmers in it, but the falls had dried up.
The walk to McKenzie Springs camel trail was rather hot & a good part of 2 hrs return if you plan to walk it. There's very few trees along that trail.

You will love the area, especially Karijini NP. There's so much to see there.

To whet your appetite, you can view some / many pics from my blog

ps Hamersley Gorge was closed when we went through due to repairs (?)

Hope you enjoy your trip

cheers
Sue

we did Aug also and it was fine. The water levels were down but that also meant that the walks were all open and safe.

Advice from the rangers (which we took and worked out well) is to split the gorges into two days (basically draw a line down the middle on the map).

roads were very corrugated when we were then which kept the numbers down. We had many hours at some gorges all to our selves; i'm assuming because people with caravans didn't want to take their vans on these roads. There are some that have sealed roads and carparks to them but obviously they are much more busy.

it is an amazing place so enjoy.

How many days would you recommend that we spend there?

we had two full days which was just enough time. If I had my time again I would do 3-4. This gives you more time to spend swimming around the gorges etc without looking at the time.
To be honest we didn't know anything about this place apart from a few web pages before we went there. It was the real surprise of our trip. We felt a little rushed with the 2 full days but in saying that we did get everything done.
