which is best for living the nomadic life...we have on our old hilux of 22 years an alloy bullbar which has been great ...we are getting a tray back this time as we feel it will give us much more room on the dual cab we are getting than the tub...the lightness of the alloy attracts us ...but some still prefer the steel even though its heavy which will come in to play when you are living on the road with a smaller off road caravan and carrying all you own...looking forward to your thoughts...ross and chris

Alloy is lighter, but is more difficult to repair or weld if something breaks or cracks. Basically any outback garage can weld steel, even the bush welders using a couple of 12 volt batteries. However you will need an expert to fix alloy cracks or breaks.

So true about the welding...we have just come back from a trip where we cracked the air con bracket and a shock absorber mount on our off road camPer and we had to get them welded at Tom price thank you

Unless you plan on doing lots of rough corrugated stuff I would go for the Aluminium to keep the weight down

most alum trays the floor is in segments any way so these can just be replaced had one in my last vehicle Hilux and if carrying any thing that may damage the floor of the tray I used two sections of ply to lay in the tray first had Hilux for three years and no tray damage

If your buying new the first thing I would do is a GVM upgrade.

Steel is always stronger for the given size, most alloy trays are interlocked or riveted together to save manufacturing costs.

Once ally cracks it's hard to repair by welding.

hi all we have decided to get the deluxe alloy tray from tiptop trays in kurringi near hornsby in sydney nsw... which has a lifetime warranty...the main reason in the end comes down to weight for us. also the bullbar will be steel..even though we have an alloy on the old hilux for 22 years...only hit one roo ...last year on the back road from st george to mitchell. we think he hit underneath mostly..this road is notorious for roos at all times of the day we are always on watch.. now the next decision is to have a hard alloy canopy or canvas... like we have now....we are used to accessing the back from all sides...and we are hoping to be able to sleep in the canopy if we have to ..perhaps when leaving the caravan..for a while to do a tough off road track...we know that the security of the lock down would be good...but we have never had anything pinched out of the back of the old soft canopy on our hilux.....i guess the weight will come into play here too...we are sitting on the fence at the moment ...as we have to get the set up right for us..as we will be nomadic...lol...
