It is no problem at all. I came through in October but with the
Kimberley Karavan on. Years ago I used to haul grain into
Sydney along the
Putty Road. There are very few heavy vehicles on it now but lots of motor cycles.
We free camped about half way at
the Grey Gum Cafe.
http://www.greygumcafe.com.au They are very pleasant and have wonderful meals.
It is much better than fighting along the F3 especially at this time of the year. I peeled off the Hume Highway onto Narellan Road and came around the west to get onto the
Putty Road. So easy compared to staying on the Highway.
I am certain you will not be sorry.
Cheers

Depends on where you are coming from ??
If from south of
Sydney, and it's not boxing day, then stick to the F3..
Even if I lived at Penrith, I'd be thinking twice about it....it's a long way from Millbrodale back over to
Nelson Bay !!
But if you really want to go that way, a big van will be no worries !!

I used to live in
Kurrajong and frequently towed a large horse float up and down the road to
Scone etc for competitions. Easy to drive on, just a bit windy at either end requiring slow cornering for the horses. The only issue I had was drive at dawn or dusk - too many kangaroos etc! Otherwise I much preferred it to the F3.

It has been frequently closed due to accidents over the past few months so be extra careful. They put an electronic message up on the M4 near Penrith when it happens and it has happened more than usual lately.

Hey Margaret
If you're not in a hurry, the
Putty is a great drive,a bit hilly through Colo on the
Richmond end and a lot of tightish corners up on the
Singleton end, but just take it easy and you will be fine. As mentioned above, there are lots of motor bikes, but they are no real worry. The old cafe about half way burned down and was closed when we went through about about six months ago.
Keep safe out there

There is a new and very popular cafe a few clicks south of the old one now.
Free camping with showers I think. Cheers

I live in the Windsor area too. Would be fine & a much more enjoyable drive than the F3. There are some nice stops along the way. If you have time the Bob Turner track walk down to the river is lovely - a nice big wide bend in the river & a great pace to swim (or
camp) - allow 40 minutes down, 1+ hour back up, plus swimming, watch for snakes on the track this time of year.

Probably easier on the F3 but still OK on the
Putty, however you will have to concentrate around the bends. Either OK and enjoy your stay.
