Apple maps explanation

I found out why the Apple maps gps sent those people off into the Big Desert instead of Mildura. Apparently, if you simply type Mildura into the gps, it sends you to the geographic centre of the named local government area of Mildura, not the town itself. As another example, Goulburn sends you to the middle of a fellows farm near Goulburn NSW. It is certainly a logic error in the application. I suppose if you typed Australia it would direct you to near Alice Springs. There seems to be no accounting for the situation where the town and council names are the same.

So in theory if the default for a town name was made to 'town name "post office" ', apple could fix the vast majority of their problems, not quite 100% as not all towns/villages have a post office but most would.

Like any computer, the answer you get is only as good as the parameters you put in. But thank god Google Maps are back. Nice new interface too!

Which would explain why the Swan River in Perth ends at the Fremantle Traffic bridge and not emptying into the Indian Ocean

Mike I think the issue you raise is just one of many symptoms of the poor maps, Port Melbourne being called Pyremont, the Derwent river being a dam amongst may others.

The problem is that Apple apparently have only had about 300 people working on the maps for a couple of years, as opposed to Google having over 5000 staff on their maps for about 8 years. Getting the maps right is time intensive and apple sorely underestimated the effort to get it right, especially as their priority is the US and UK.

I have read that it will take at least 5 years to get apple maps up to a standard that is reliable outsude the US even if they multiplied their workforce by 5 fold.

Knowing Apple's recent history on such things I suggest that within 12 months they will drop their mapping solution and walk away.
