While I believe in doing my own research I would like others opinions on what to look for or avoid when buying a dash cam. HD, night vision, sound etc etc. Thanks in advance.
BTW have a great day tomorrow, Christmas Day.
Rob.

We've been running one of
These continuously for the last 4 1/2 months while on our current trip in North America, it has performed faultlessly in that period. A "normal" days drive takes up about 8-10 GB on the SD card. I've got a 32GB card which will usually record 2-3 days before overwriting the existing video. Turns on and off automatically whenever the engine is started, has anti shake and lots of other features.

Peter,
Couple of questions for you. My last dash camera shook it's self to pieces on corrugations so could you tell me if you have done much on dirt with the camera and how long the battery lasts if recording if not connected to the vehicle.
Thanks,
RA.

We've done a few thousand k's of rough dirt, not as many corro's as Oz but enough to cause grief and the camera and mount has handled them
well.
Not sure of the exact time without power connected as we usually only notice when it switches off because it is flat when the cord gets pulled out of the fag socket, I'd reckon it would be a hour or so at least.

Peter
Is yours good enough to read number plates? The one we have isn't good enough.

Looking at the video on the laptop at about a postcard size you can clearly see and read the numberplates in traffic if the car in front is within 1 1/2 vehicle lengths.
I guess on a bigger screen as it is HD it would be clearer for this glasses wearing old fella.

That would do me. I only need to be able to get that level of detail when back home. We dont go for tablets or laptops or any of that other stuff. Even though I worked in a high tech industry from 1970 I left all that stuff back at work when I retired.
So being able to see it on a larger screen will suffice.
Thaks Peter

PS But I have a mobile. However it's in the bedside drawer and flat a a tack without any prepaid funds on it.

I also own an older model of the DOD 'Black Box' dash cams (made in Taiwan), the GS600. Never missed a beat, records continuously. I only use it for crash or other incident evidence. The quality of the suction mounts is ok, not as good as a ram mount but not too bad. I dont reckon it would stay on the windscreen in heavy corrigations though.
I've noticed DOD's new versions are getting pretty fancy, but you can still pick up some of the models (without GPS) for under $100 shipped off ebay. I've used XORIES in the past, without any problem (no affiliation etc). I dont like how so many models have become so large with the incorporation of screens etc, my GS600 is nice an small on the dash.
I'm thinking about getting another as a rear cam.

G'day Rob,
I purchased an
Itronics ITB100HD on ebay for $212 with a 32GB SD Card including shipping to Aus.
Had it fitted to the vehicle for 6 months now and had no problems what-so-ever, and that includes 4wding with it.
Has built in GPS for tracking, a built in G-sensor for sudden impact recording, motion detection recording, built in microphone (selectable to on or off) as
well as different recording modes etc (check link above).
Obviously not as versatile as a GoPro, but as a set & forget type of thing for piece of mind you can't go wrong. Sound quality is good apart from if you have the windows wound right down whilst driving (personally I turn the mic off , but is easy to turn on if need be). Picture quality is excellent even at night.
PS: If you did buy one of these from overseas (cheaper) just be aware that you will have to chase down an English version of the PC software as the one thast it comes with will be Chinese.

We got a cheap incar camera that was on sale at Aldi for $90 and lets say its paid for itself over and over. It saves footage to and SD card in HD, and is motion activated with a 170 degree lens.
It has recorded a
Cape York and a
Birdsville trip this year and survived the corrigations. I even suctioned it on the outside of the car to get different footage at times.
