Diamantina Lakes National Park

A group of us happy campers hope to do a trip up to the top end via the Diamantina Lakes National Park. Does anyone have information about fuel availability for doing this area. We plan to travel to Birdsville then on to Bedourie and then across to the National Park and on to Winton. We know we can get fuel at Bedourie but so far I can only find the next availability at Winton and that is nearly 600 kms away. Thanks

Are you going via Boulia? Then into the National Park? Kevin

Hi,

That's how we did it in '09. But you need to allow for more.

It's another 120km from memory that you have to allow for to do the day trip loop while in the National Park.

We did two nights in DLNP. Only criticism was the cost of camping in an NP that had no facilities other than a drop loo over a 44g drum.

Lovely spot - lots of birdlife, but nearly missed the turn off into camp coming from Bedourie as everything seemed to be signposted as if you were expected to come from the other direction.

As you travel north the billabong on Old Cork Station looked like a pretty good place to stop a couple of days too.

Yep that's about right. We did it in July 08 or 09 in from Boulia and out to Windorah. The Qld Parks web site does warn you about fuel issues. As the response above, great spot. I thought Boulia would be as close as Winton, without consulting a map.
Back then the dirt roads were in great shape, couldn't comment since the floods. It is the type of place you do need to stay at least two nights to appreciate.

We drove through there last August and the roads were in good nick.

Really remote and you have to be self sufficient but worth the trouble.

We came from Thargomindah through Durham Downs and Arrabury to Boulia. We didn't have fuel for about 1000kms.

In 2008 we went in from the south and out to the NW.
Couple of pics in this slide show...

Hi Kev

A link to the first of 2 blogs from our 2011 trip into Diamantina is here (at the bottom of the blog you can just click the link through to the next one). We went in from Bedourie and out to Boulia, and the full day circuit in the park itself is a must-do, so allow another 100k or so for that. You may need to carry some jerries if you dont have LR tanks as you are correct the next fuel after Bedourie would be Winton

Cheers,

Val
