Hi, Does anyone know of the exact(ish) route that is used for the crossing of Australia's widest point from Byron Bay to
Steep Point in WA.

If you can get hold of a copy of the double DVD "Wheels Across a Wilderness and a Journey Revisited" it will show you the first original journey that was undertaken by the then unknown Leyland Brothers. It was this first film when I was a
young boy that got me hooked on the outback, and will stay in my blood until the day I die, and like many Australians owe this love to the Leyland Brothers solely. The second DVD is when Mike Leyland was an invited guest to retrace the original trip.
The trip takes in some classic Australian outback tracks including the then newly made
Gunbarrel Highway and the world renowned
Simpson Desert.
Do yourself a favour, get hold of the DVD's and you will want to get out there and see our great outback in the flesh.

Thats great thanks everyone.
I am an endurance mountainbiker and am exploring the possibility of doing it by bike. I have previously cycled from
Laverton to Uluru so kind of know what Im letting myself in for, but obviously this will be much tougher and need alot more research.... keep the info coming!!

I did this in 1977 (Suzuki 4wd 2 stroke) Hans holstrop did it a year or so later in Diahatsu. I was inspired by the Leyland Brothers, their book where dead men lie was the first they wrote after leaving school it a good read & i believe it was out before there film, its all about the crossing,
That's when it was a challenge
Stephen has it right, if you want it in more detail i could look back, we did not follow it to a tee due to available supplies & breakdown's

We were in
Meekatharra in 2004 and there was a tag along tour group of about 8 /10 vehicles getting fuel who were on there way to
Steep point from Byron Bay.
Sorry cant remember who the leader were.

The tagalong is
Outback Tagalong Tours This is the link to their caravan trip but gives you the idea of their route. The leaders are Tony and Brenda.I have not done the trans tour but did the High Country one which was very good.

The was also a book released by the leylands, 'where dead men lie'.
I was lucky enough to find a copy on ebay. and original 1968 print.
We travelled west to east this year and took in:
PilbaraGibson desert
Uluru
Simpson
Cape Byron
There a many different ways to approach trip, all depends on what you would like to take in.
