Tracker to Katherine
Today we left
Kakadu behind to make our way to
Katherine. We are not sorry to be leaving behind a cabin full of the most minuscule ants, they made there way into our luggage, food box, computer, bed absolutely everywhere. Browsing ants (Lepisiota frauenfeldi) are invasive
pests, measuring just 3 to 4 mm in length with slender bodies and long antennae. We hope we have not given many a lift to
Katherine.
On our way to
Katherine we stopped at
Pine Creek to have some lunch. We were going to detour into
Butterfly Gorge however unfortunately it was closed we assume due to the wet season.
Pine Creek, a historic outback town is best known for its rich 1870s gold rush history,
well-preserved pioneering
heritage. Gold was discovered entirely by accident in 1871 by workers constructing the
Overland Telegraph Line. It is the only original mining town remaining in the Top End from this era.
Pine Creek was once the inland terminus for the North Australian Railway. The preserved station and exhibits at the
Pine Creek Railway
Heritage Precinct gave us plenty to look at to stretch our legs.
