Day 59 Cable Beach

Today we spent the morning trying to recover 500 off lost photos, which in the end we were able to do. So I have added a few extra photos to yesterdays blog of the dolphins and a couple of turtles.

The camels walked past our car on there way to work. They are a true Broome sight coming and going to work every day.



Many lives were sacrificed by the Asian migrants who settled in Broome to prosper from Broome’s lucrative pearling industry. The Japanese Cemetery in Broome is the largest Japanese cemetery in Australia, and dates back to 1896. Obelisks mark the graves of over 900 Japanese pearlers. The Chinese Cemetery is found next to the Japanese Cemetery, and there is also a Muslim cemetery with many graves of Malay divers who contributed to the pearling boom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There is also an Aboriginal cemetery 50 metres south of the Japanese cemetery. Hundreds of graves, with unique headstones crafted out of coloured beach rocks.

Pearl diving was a dangerous pursuit. A large stone obelisk in the cemetery recalls those who were drowned at sea in the 1908 cyclone. The cyclones of 1887 and 1935 each caused the deaths of at least 140 men. The majority of deaths commemorated in the cemetery resulted from the bends or drowning.





We visited Yawu­ru Jarn­du Abo­rig­i­nal Cor­po­ra­tion – trad­ing as Nag­u­la Jarn­du (Salt­wa­ter Woman) is a Not for Prof­it incor­po­rat­ed body with a mem­ber­ship of 150 Indige­nous women and is gov­erned by 6 Yawu­ru women Directors. The organ­i­sa­tion evolved into an arts and tex­tiles busi­ness, offer­ing train­ing in screen print­ing and dress­mak­ing, pro­duc­ing fab­rics for cloth­ing and home wares, designed and made by local Indige­nous artists. Spe­cial­is­ing in tex­tiles, every piece of work is an orig­i­nal.





We also visited Broome Time Resorts Art Gallery and we even purchased a piece of artwork to take home as a reminder of our time in the Kimberley.






And once again the sun sets on another day.
