David and Michelle's adventure began 25 years ago with a scuba diving holiday in Vanuatu. This holiday was not just a break from their corporate grind, but a catalyst for a complete lifestyle change. Inspired by their experiences and conversations with fellow travelers, they decided to quit their high-paying jobs, sell everything they owned, and embark on an unplanned journey around Australia.
In this process, they joined the Toyota Land Cruiser Club, purchased a troop carrier, and set off for
Cape York following a cancer scare for David to begin their adventure. David's knowledge of the internet led to the creation of a website, Beach and Beyond, where they documented their travel and scuba experiences. This platform, which started as a personal journal, soon attracted a following of 10,000 like-minded individuals, and was the birthplace of their future business, ExplorOz.
During their travels, David and Michelle had a heartwarming experience in
Birdsville, a small town that inspired them to use their platform to support local businesses. They developed a business plan and created a customer management system for regional businesses. To fund this endeavour, they returned to
Sydney to pick up contract work, all while continuing their journey across the continent to
Perth.
The creation of ExplorOz was an organic process. It was a fusion of their passion for travel, their understanding of the internet, and the growing community of followers they had gathered through their website. The business model evolved, integrating maps and continuously adapting to the needs of their audience.
