Using Traveller on Phones, Tablets and In-car Screens

This guide explains how ExplorOz Traveller works across phones, tablets and in-vehicle screens, including what is required for each setup.

Android and CarPlay Headunit Displays

If your vehicle only supports CarPlay or Android Auto, you will need an Android adapter (AI Box) to run Traveller. This is typically required for factory-fitted headunits in newer vehicles. See the section below "Factory Fitted Headunits with AI Box (Android Adapter)".

Only a limited range of approved apps are supported in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and ExplorOz Traveller is not one of them. However, by using an AI Box (Android adapter), you can run Traveller on your vehicle screen.

To use Traveller on your vehicle screen, you need a full Android system. This can be either:
  • a built-in Android head unit
  • or, an Android interface device connected to your existing screen (AI Box)
These systems run Android, allowing you to install ExplorOz Traveller from the Google Play Store and use it directly on your vehicle display with full Google support. The app runs entirely on the device - your phone is not required.

Traveller requires Android 10 or higher, however newer versions are strongly recommended.

Factory Fitted Headunits with AI Box (Android Adapter)

If your vehicle has CarPlay or Android Auto only, this section explains how to use an AI Box (Android adapter) to run Traveller.

Factory CarPlay and Android Auto systems can be upgraded by using an Android interface adapter. This adds a full Android operating system to your existing setup, allowing you to install and run ExplorOz Traveller directly on the vehicle screen.

This setup allows you to:
  • Access the Google Play Store
  • Install and run ExplorOz Traveller directly on your screen
  • Retain your factory display
  • Use other Android apps on the same system
This is a widely used and reliable solution within the Traveller community. All apps run directly on the adapter device - your phone is not used.

Installation Instructions (YouTube)

These Smartworld AI Box Adapters ship with Android 13. When you set up the AI Box, you will be able to open the Google Play Store and install the Android version of the ExplorOz Traveller app. If already purchased on Android, you can install it again at no cost. iPhone/iPad purchases do not transfer and will require a separate purchase.

Aftermarket In-Dash Head Units

If your vehicle does not have a compatible system, you can install an aftermarket head unit with a full Android operating system. Many of these units also include CarPlay and Android Auto for phone use, but it is the Android system that allows Traveller to run.

When choosing a unit, the Android version is critical.
  • Android 12 or 13 is recommended for new headunits. Most units use locked firmware and do not receive updates, meaning critical components such as Android WebView may become outdated and affect app performance.
Be aware that some devices in the market:
  • Use older Android versions (8, 9, 10, 11)
  • Have limited or no upgrade pathways
  • Advertise incorrect Android versions or specifications
Always confirm the actual Android version with the supplier before purchase.

Some aftermarket head units run older underlying Android systems and don’t receive ongoing system updates. As a result, their WebView component can become outdated and no longer support the requirements of modern apps. Known issues exist with Vhedia X Series, some Polaris models, and some EC Offroad units. Please check with the supplier for compatibility.

Recommended Hardware

We recommend purchasing from manufacturers who design and support their own hardware. We currently use and recommend Teyes headunits. The latest CC4Pro models run Android 13 and have been tested extensively in our own vehicles with excellent performance.

Other brands such as Kenwood and Alpine may also offer suitable options, provided the Android version is confirmed. The operating system is the key factor to long-term performance and compatibility.

Portable Display Option

If a built-in headunit is not suitable, a portable display is a simple alternative. The Smart World App2Car Display is a plug-and-play unit with a built-in Android system and does not require professional installation.

It provides:
  • Dedicated display mounted on your dashboard
  • Full Android operating system (Android 13)
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto compatibility
  • GPS for offline use
This allows ExplorOz Traveller to run directly on the device. It is a practical and cost-effective option, although being a mounted display, it differs from integrated in-dash systems.

TIP

Paid apps are not cross-platform. If you currently use Apple devices, you will need to purchase the Android version of ExplorOz Traveller to use it on Android-based head units or Android Interface devices.

Phones, Tablets & iPads

Device Requirements and Compatibility

ExplorOz Traveller is designed for modern mobile devices with sufficient performance and storage to support offline mapping.

Phones and Tablets

Traveller works on:
  • iPhone and iPad
  • Android phones and tablets
For best performance, your device should:
  • Run a current operating system
  • Have adequate internal storage for offline maps
  • Be capable of running modern apps smoothly
Most modern devices meet these requirements.

Storage Requirements

Offline maps require available storage space on your device. Typical usage:
  • Base offline maps - approximately 2.5 GB
  • Optional additional map data such as Contours and Terrain require additional storage
Modern devices with 128 GB storage or more are generally well suited.

Performance Guidance (Android)

For Android devices:
  • 6 GB RAM recommended (8 GB ideal)
  • Entry-level devices may run slower with large offline datasets
Devices designed mainly for browsing or streaming may not deliver the best experience.

iPad and GPS

iPad models vary in GPS capability:
  • WiFi-only iPads do not have a built-in GPS
  • WiFi + Cellular iPads include GPS functionality
If using a WiFi-only iPad, an external Bluetooth GPS receiver is required for location tracking. Internet services such as Starlink provide data only and do not provide GPS location.
