A 2.4 metre deep fresh
water well was dug on the site in 1880. It was lined with whale bones and old ship timbers, and equipped with a whip to raise
water to a trough made from a burnt out gum log or a whaling trypot. The
well was quite an upgrade from the previous harvesting of
water by sinking casts into the
places where
water oozed out of the rocks.
In 1926 the Dudley Council relined the
well with timber and installed a windmill and a galvanised iron trough to
water the local stock.
Water was pumped to the local hotel and boarding house until the early 1960’s.
Water was as important for their much valued livestock as it was for early settlers.
