Old
Mataranka Sheep Dip is a historic pastoral site located in
Elsey National Park, near
Mataranka in the Northern Territory. The remains of this early sheep-dipping facility provide an interesting reminder of the region's short-lived experimental sheep farming industry during the early 20th century. In 1913, the Northern Territory administration established an experimental sheep farm at
Mataranka to investigate the suitability of the region for wool production. The sheep dip was constructed to control external parasites by immersing sheep in a chemical treatment solution. Animals were guided through narrow holding yards and into a deep plunge bath to ensure their fleece was thoroughly treated.Despite initial optimism, the sheep farming experiment struggled with the harsh tropical climate, seasonal flooding, drought and other challenges. By 1920, the remaining sheep had been sold and the venture abandoned.Today, visitors can view the surviving remains of the original sheep dip and associated timber structures, providing an insight into the early attempts to establish pastoral industries in the Top End.The site is located along John Hauser Drive within
Elsey National Park, which also provides access to the
Roper River,
4 Mile and
12 Mile Yards, and several other historic attractions.**This is a
historic site, not a designated
camping area.** Visitors should respect the
heritage structures and avoid disturbing or climbing on the remains.
Camping is available at designated campgrounds elsewhere in the
park.
