At Mulurark the
Roper River tumbles over an arc of low
flat rock, with calmer
water below the rapids, a
sandy beach and a broad rock ledge. As you walk to the
Roper River you will pass clumps of
grey pitted rock called
limestone. However, when you look to the opposite bank you may notice that those rocks are flat faced, dark red and stacked in layers. The
red rock is an ancient
sandstone called Kombolgie
Sandstone and can also be seen along the
Katherine Gorge and Arnhem Land escarpment. Here at Mulurark, the
Roper River flows along an ancient fault line that divides these two land formations. And if you enjoy fishing there are plenty of good, shady spots along the Riverside Walk to indulge your passion.
