The Franklin runs through the Wild Rivers National Park. It is one of Tasmania's best known rivers. The rest area is on the highway and offers toilets and picnic facilities.

The Lyell Highway crosses the Franklin between Queenstown and Derwent Bridge around 60 kilometres east of Queenstown.

The walks through the forest and along the river are a short distance from the highway.
