The pool you see below is at the base
of the lower falls. The lower talls can
be viewed from the Oxley Walk via the
suspension footbridge.
The
Apsley River catchment forms a significant part of the Macleay River catchment which enters the sea at
South West Rocks downstream of Kempsey.
Several other river gorges join the
Apsley River downstream of here, the main ones being Tia River, Yarrowitch River, Green Gully Creek, and Rowleys Creek.
Many more rivers flow into the Macleay River east of Armidale forming a vast and rugged
gorge system collectively know as the Macleay-
Apsley Gorges.
The dramatic cliffs in front of you are made of slate. Slate was quarried in the early 20th century about 5km to the east. The Presbyterian Church and the National Bank building in
Walcha have roofs made of this slate.
The dominant native trees you see along the
walking tracks are Black Cypress Pine,
New England Stringybark, Snow Gum,
Bendemeer White Gum and
Grey Box.
