Tia Falls are unique in the
New England region by having several tiers plus a reliable water flow, only drying up during severe drought periods. Several small
cascades are located below the main falls, as the Tia River winds its way 10km further north to join the
ApsleyRiver
gorge. The Tia &
Apsley gorges are just 2 of the many rugged gorges of the upper Macleay River catchment.
The
Apsley-Macleay gorges are part of the traditional lands of the Dunghutti people. Presence of Aboriginal people was
well documented by the British explorer
John Oxley as he passed through the Tia valley in September 1818 on route to the coast. Aboriginal people still have a strong affiliation with
the gorge country to this day.
Landscape painter Conrad Martens captured the beauty and grandeur of Tia &
Apsley Falls on his journey through the
New England region in
