The marine park surrounding Lord Howe Island contains the world's southernmost barrier coral reef. The island's marine environment holds over 300 species of algae (around one-tenth of which are unique to the area), over 450 species offish (also around one-tenth unique to the area) and over 120 species of molluscs. Green and hawksbill turtles are common in summer, but may be observed throughout the year.
Activities include Swimming, surfing, snorkelling and
scuba diving are ail popular in the crystal waters of the park, and boat trips, fishing and diving tours operate from the island.
Access 700 km north-east of
Sydney. The island can be reached by a regular air service 2 hours flying time from
Sydney.
