Murtoa
Silo Art - can only viewed from Soldier’s Avenue near
Water Tower Museum.Artist Sam
Bates, aka Smug, completed the Murtoa
Silo Art in May 2022What inspired Smug to create this magnificent artwork?Smug took inspiration from the James
Hill taxidermy collection found in the Murtoa
Water Tower Museum, combined with the discoveries of Murtoa-born, Dr. John Cade, a psychiatrist who made significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of bipolar disorder. 30 remarkably detailed birds can be found on the silos with one unique glowing bird representing the 1 in 30 Australians who suffer from mental health illness. The
mural is a testament to the power of art to inspire and connect people, as
well as to educate and raise awareness about important issues.Smug designed the work so that light at different times of the day highlight different parts of the art. Dave Jones, from Transience designed the permanent light animation which transforms the silo at night. The best time to view the art is in the afternoon sunlight before the nightglow experience begins at sunset.
