UHF CB radios

Hi all

We are getting prepared for our round Australia trip some time end 2013 or early 2014, and I am considering installing a Uniden UH7700NB +CH5T 477 MHZ UHF CB combo offered on Prestige communications.
Does anybody have this radio or have reference of them being good or bad.
All feedback appreciated, as I have no knowledge on UHF CB radios.

Thanks in advance

Rob

Hi Rob

To be honest, I have no experience with the UH47700NB, but have you looked at the GME range of radios? All GME vehicle mounted radios are 100% made right here in Sydney Australia, where as all Uniden radios are 100% made in China.

It is up to you but I know what I would be buying if it was me [the brand that I already have, which happens to be GME]

Cheers

I would recommend the GME as well over the Uniden....... GME are more accepted in the outback and are the radio of choice for transport, mining, earthmoving use.

Has a bigger dedicated dealer network and most truck stops carry spare microphones and brackets.

I also would go the GME as it a better product. I have had one for a few years now and no problems. Only thing make sure it is a radio technician that installs it, (not an auto electrician).

Why do you suggest a 'radio technician' install a cb radio any auto lecy could do it properly with his eys closed. It has to be the most simple install any body can do.

I say this because I have seen so many jobs done and they are not up to specifications. The amount of vehicles I see that have their mobile phone and cb antenna next to each other makes me shudder. Is just an observation

Whats wrong with having a mobile phone antenna next to a UHF CB antenna?....... What do you call next to?

And as for a radio tech doing an install..... I have seen some very average work from some who should no better including auto elecs.

Nothing wrong with Uniden, GME (which I have), or Icom Rob. People who apparently know a lot about radios will tell you Icom > GME > Uniden, although it's possible that may have changed with the very latest models. Unless you are very unlucky you won't ever need parts or repairs and they are very simple to install yourself.

being a biased person of icom forever (ic-440pro 80 channel), they are probably the ants pants but at a cost. If one cannot afford the expense my next choice woud be gme as uniden have an inherent audio problem. The internal speaker is much to be desired, unless they have upgraded recently.
I also use 2x 5watt handhelds when we leave the vechile, as i go walkabouts doing photography whilst the cook does her thing. Yes an extra expense but well worth it for safety purposes - (also icom 41

I have a uniden in my car at the moment and I am about to change it Probably to the Icom or the gme as the uniden although when new was good after a few years the speaker has developed some bad habits that sound like the middle part of the speaker is starting to come apart. The unit is five years old, and has been in two 4x4 and has been down some rough and corrugated roads. I don't think I will go back to Uniden. for what it is worth that is my experience with uniden. I have GME in my boat and it has been in there for about 8 years so far and, no hassles.the boat radio is a 27 meg, it may be built different I don't know I only use them, and don't know a lot about them. I hope this helps you in some small way.
